In the heart of Salzburg, and generally free of tourists is a centuries old Franciscan church. Wonderfully decorated, with paintings and sculptures. Definitely worth the visit!

Excellent church, a unique combination of gothic and baroque. Soaring ceilings and elegant columns. The original church on the site, built in the 8th century, burned in 1167, and the current church rebuilt after the fire. Unlike the cathedral, there is no charge to enter the church or pressure to donate.

The Franziskanerkirche is located in the heart of the Old Town and one of the oldest churches in Salzburg. The first church on this site was erected in the eighth century. In the fifteenth century a Gothic choir was added. The nine baroque chapels in the choir date from the eighteenth century.

For 10 year we go to the Holy Mass in the Franziskanerkirche when we visit Salzburg for the Mozartwoche. The church is not heated and pretty chilly. But the words of Father Hrastnik OFM at the Holy Mass and the music & singing always are heartwarming. The Holy Mass of 5 February 2023 was recorded by Servus TV.

This time we heard Mozart’s Missa Brevis in in D-Dur KV194, composed in 1774. It is scored for SATB soloists, choir, violins, trumpets and basso continuo. Although classed as a Missa Brevis the inclusion of trumpets makes it a Missa Brevis et Solemnis. The Franziskanerkirche Choir & Orchestra was directed by Prof. Gfrerer.

Mozart tried to satisfy Colloredo's demands for brevity and concision in the composition of this Mass. The orchestra is reduced, none of the movements have an orchestral prelude and there is very little fugal writing.

Note that a Mozart Missa in a church during a Holy Mass is totally different from a Missa Brevis on CD or a hearing a performance in a concert hall. In the Franziskanerkirche you can hear and feel what Mozart meant. Highly recommended.

A surprisingly plain gothic-style church. Not worth setting aside time or going out of your way to see.

This town has a lot of churches. This one is towards the center of the town. It’s a large church. I thought it was quite nice. It adds to the “skyline” of churches in the town.

Another of the many attractive churches in Salzburg, but difficult to get a view of due to how compact the area around it is.

The full splendor is only revealed from the inside. As with many churches, different epochs of architecture mix, due to the countless renovations and extensions of the "original" church.
Today's Franciscan Church consists of the Romanesque nave basilica with a beautiful ribbed vault. Adjacent to this is the late Gothic and delicate star rib vault. Imposing and impressive inside.

The Franszikanerkirche is barrier-free accessible for everyone. In contrast to many other places of worship, the church does not cost any entry fee. However, you can make a small donation at the entrance to the church if you want.

What it lacks in size compared to the Cathedral it makes up in height and design. It was originally the high vaulted section with the altar. An addition was made for more seating but it really gives the church an odd design. The best part is the original building with the high roof and tower. While the inside is beautiful with several side chapels and great stain glass, it is the vaulted ceiling and five support columns that make this a Salzburg MUST SEE. It is what distinguishes the church and makes it unique, along with is Gothic design in a Baroque city.
