    Salzburg’s fun history
It iş a must when you are Salzburg, I only stayed 2 nights but took a tour by ship to go there. The sculptures, the trick fountains.. if you are on a family trip it will also be really funny. Don’y miss the Schloss by taking too much time in the gardens.

    Beautiful but pricey
Nice palace, I would suggest if you have time but it takes approximately 30 minutes with public transform from the city center. The gardens are really nice. There is a museum and "wasserspiele". I think the entrance is a bit pricey.

    Great place to visit
We visited (2 adults and 2 children) and enjoyed this so much. The audio guide tour of the palace was interesting and thorough. The trick fountains and gardens are the star of the show. Surprises at every turn were delightful. We would be happy to visit here again.

    Adventzauber Schloss Hellbrunn - märchenhaft
We visited the advent Christmas market after visiting the zoo. Firstly, we walked through the gardens and saw the amazing angel statue that was dominating the grounds, hey girlie which had been beautifully lit. We visited the summer house which was used in the filming of the Sound of Music and then went to the Christmas market. The Christmas market was absolutely brilliant. It costs €7 per person but you do get a Glühwein in return. I didn’t have small children but there was a brilliant section, specifically aimed at children with animals and other activities, including a small village to visit, there was also a section on Krampus and the atmosphere was brilliant. The castle itself had been converted into a huge advent calendar which dominated the scene. Fantastic.

The water games are unique. Loved them. Take care of your mobile phone (you will get -though not soaking- wet) )and go for the water experience.

We were on a Sound of Music Tour and briefly stopped at Heilbrunn Castle to see the Sound of Music glass gazebo located in the gardens. Although I was not as familiar with the scene as most of the people on the tour, this was the filming location where Liesl and Franz whispered their love to each other, where Maria and Georg's romantic scene took place, as well as the duet "Sixteen going on Seventeen." We did not tour the castle or see the Trick Fountains which the location is also known for. (PaM)

The Hellbrunn was recommended to us by hotel reception. The actual castle is not as impressive in size as some other castles in Austria, but the Trick Fountains at the back of the castle are the real stars of this castle. Full of surprises. It will surprise you, and children will love it!

You will not remember the name of Markus Sittikus, who built the villa—now a Palace—south of Salzburg. You will remember his pranks, though, of spraying people with water as they sat and walked through his gardens. Built in the early 17th century, this was Markus’s summer villa where he held parties and dinners. He slept actually in town.

I was here in 1979 and always remembered this place. Sometimes forgetting the name, but always remembering “the shooting water.” Now, in 2023, 44 years later, I took my wife to experience the joy and wonderment of these gardens. I don’t remember getting hit with water back then, but this time I was drenched not once, but three times. Markus and my wife found areas away from the water powered openings.

Little has changed, but there is more commercialization to the Palace. There is not one, but two beer gardens now! Unfortunately, going at noon, there were few seats left to enjoy a beer like I did in 1979.

On property there is the Sound of Music gazebo. It was actually located at another Palace, moved to Hellbrunn for easier access.

The “Salzburg Card” is well worth it if you can combine several activities. We were able to catch Bus 25—covered by the pass-- by the train station. There is no audio communication in the bus and we missed our stop! No problem, if you continue with Bus 25 it will take you to the cable car which takes you up the 6,000-foot Utersberg mountain. On a nice day, it is quite beautiful. The pass covers this experience.

The pass also covers, not only Hellbrunn, but the funicular up to the Salzburg Castle. If you still have energy, you can make it to Mozart’s Residence—covered by the pass. Several of his musical instruments can still be seen.

Schloss Hellbrunn is 5-6 km away from Salzburg old town. We rented bikes and rode along the river. It was a beautiful ride. The cycle tracks along the river are very bike friendly. The route to the castle is scenic and looks straight out of a scenery.

The palace has combined ticket for museum and fountain tour. The fountain tour was something new we had never experience in any other castle in Europe. Its a unique tour and not to be missed. The palace also is nicely done. We enjoyed the way exhibits are presented.

Outside the palace there are lovely gardens and lawns. Another thing not to be missed, especially for SOM fans is the Canopy where I am 16 goin on 17 was shot. Its near the gardens. The garden also has kids play area. My kid fully enjoyed various slides while I lay down on the grass enjoying the sun.

There are some eateries, but I recommend you bring pack food. Enjoy the picnic in the beautiful gardens.
