- Aimee W13 contributionsUnbelievably BeautifulIt was simply AMAZING. We happened into the Cathedral during the Christmas Market. It was a $5 entry fee. As we entered we could hear opera singing. We were fortunate to hear the practice of the choir and symphony preparation for the Christmas Concert. The Cathedral is absolutely gorgeous!! The acoustics fabulous. I was thrilled to sit under the glorious dome and just take in all of the amazing architecture and carvings. It was the most gorgeous church of my travels in Germany and Austria. Gorgeous!Visited December 2022Travelled with friendsWritten 1 January 2023
- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom2,908 contributionsA beautifully maintained building but not particularly welcomingThis was one of the first Italian Baroque buildings north of the alps built in the early 17th century on the back of enormous revenues generated from salt production placed in the hands of a privileged few. Internally the decoration is immaculate and the artistic workmanship in the displayed paintings is undeniable but despite its scale and majesty, somehow the building feels strangely unwelcoming and cold. It is almost too big and grand for a religious building. The interior had no lights on adding to the sombre mood. The nebulous entry rules don’t help either. Technically it is free but every conceivable ruse is used to persuade visitors that entry is subject to a €5 payment removing the option of voluntary donations. We found St Peters Abbey which is more modest in scale but much more charming to be a more enjoyable visit.Visited December 2022Written 7 January 2023
- MrsPiketRotterdam, The Netherlands2,450 contributionsMozart’s Credomesse in C-Dur KV257The Salzburger Dom is a seventeenth century cathedral located in the heart of the Old Town. The first church on this site was erected in the eighth century. The Cathedral still contains the baptismal font in which Mozart was baptised. The nearby Alte Residenz, is connected to the church. The Cathedral was damaged in October 1944 when a USAAF bomb crashed through the central dome over the crossing. By 1959 restoration was completed. Fortunately in WW2 much of Salzburg Baroque architecture remained intact. Visiting the Mozartwoche 2023 we went to the Holy Mass in the Salzburger Dom. The church is beautiful. This time we heard Mozart’s Credomesse KV257, composed in 1776. It is a Missa Brevis et Solemnis scored for SATB soloists, choir, violins, oboes, clarinet, trumpets and basso continuo. The Dom Choir & Orchestra was directed by Andrea Fournier. Note that a Mozart Missa in a church during a Holy Mass is totally different from listening to a Missa Brevis on CD or a hearing a performance in a concert hall. In the Salzburger Dom you can hear and feel what Mozart meant. Recommended.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2023

Later while I waited I noticed people saying they were going in to pray. They were let in also without paying the small 5 euros! So I told the guard that I had been waiting with my scooter in a snowing very cold day and that I just wanted to attend for prayer. So I was let in and later my son paid and he entered. Very easy to get around with my scooter and lots of beautiful things to see. We were there enjoying the beauty for over an hour. One of the first white Roman Baroque Cathedrals I had seen. Also there is a downstairs near the Alter with tombs! Go down the stairsVisited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 March 2023
- Neco D62 contributionsVery beautiful inside and outsideWe visited Salzburg for a day just to explore the city. We took the train from Vienna to Salzburg. The cathedral is one of the most beautiful and well preserved architecture that I have seen in Europe. Dor me its as beautiful as the Aachen Cathedral This place is a must see to all who visit the beautiful city of Salzburg.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 19 April 2023
- Joseph FaheyBoston, Massachusetts46 contributionsExcellent church to not only attend Services but to appreciate the artwork.Salzburg Cathedral is located in the center of the town square. It is a magnificent building that is spacious and stately decorated both with artwork including imposing paintings, and altars. Should one be looking to attend Mass, the experience is quite uplifting not only because of the great art but also because of the impressive music. It is not surprising that this cathedral, as well as other churches in the area also offer concerts. It is well worth the visit.Visited April 2023Written 25 April 2023
- JenintheAirAustin, Texas34 contributionsBreathtaking cathedral and impressive concertWe really saved the best for last in Salzburg. On our last afternoon, we sat for an organ concert at Salzburg Cathedral. Regular concerts take place throughout the year and also during the Advent season. This experience was without a doubt a highlight and soul-moving way to end our time in Salzburg.Visited December 2022Written 12 July 2023

What we got was a hard sell from the male cashier who berated us on the fact everyone in business in the area were going for cash only so that the authorities....govt or financial couldn't track us!!!! Ummmm, were tourists not spies! Eventually,we paid by card and enjoyed the cathedral. Very ornate and worthwhile the visit.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 July 2023

The cathedral often features classical music concerts in the summer, some of which are free, and good to take advantage of. My husband and I, together with friends, went on a guided tour of the Cathedral last Sunday week while on a mini break in Salzburg.
The tour was very interesting for people who understand German. It would have been better if there was a audio guide in several languages, especially if people have hearing problems.

Salzburg Cathedral is beautiful. It is a stunning place of simplicity. We were fortunate to go to the music at noon and listen to two people play five of the organs. There was a young chap explaining the music and the history of the cathedral in both English and German and it was nice that the focus was on Jesus. The highlight for me was 3 young people who simply came and stood in the nave and sang a worship song and prayed for Ukraine as they obviously do every day at 12.30. It is a very special place.

Loving how sacred the church though considered a tourist attraction. No lines and no advance ticket purchase needed.

We arrived just in time for the daily organ concert, which was a treat to hear music played by 2 organists on 4 of the cathedral's organs.
The musical pieces were introduced by a member of the cathedral staff, who told us about the history and the features of the cathedral.
He also explained the significance of the resurrection of Jesus, as depicted in the painting of the resurrection above the altar with the words "You have made known to me the ways of life".
Then it was a privilege to join a small group of young people who faithfully lead prayers for Ukraine every day after each concert.

This cathedral is really big and imposing. Inside it looks like a pale copy of St Peter’s cathedral in Rome. The ceiling is very worked and has some colours. Outside the cathedral is white. There’s also a crypt with some bishops tombs.

My son and I arrived just before noon and it turned out there was an organ concert of about 45 minutes at that time. We did have to pay to get in, but it was well worth it. The announcer gave some brief information about the music and the cathedral in both German and English, and the organist played a number of beautiful pieces from three (of the six!) different organs in the cathedral. Afterwards we wandered around looking at the artwork and the chapels. It was a great experience and well worth the money.

We were drawn to this cathedral because it was where Mozart was baptized one day after he was born (just down the street). We also discovered that he played for church services at the age of 13. Unique baptismal font. Stunning dome interior. Glad to see it is a functioning parish that has prayer services for Ukraine during the week.

How long in duration is the typical Sunday high Mass?
MrsPiket
Rotterdam, The Netherlands2,450 contributions
Concerts at the Alte Residenz Fischbrunnensaal are organised by an agency and perform daily by young unknown musicians Mozart’s music with a focus on tourists. When you are in Salzburg on a Sunday I recommend to attend a musical Holy Mass in the Franziskanerkirche or the Cathedral. They have almost every Sunday a Mass by Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven etc. Please check their website. A Holy Mass will take about an hour. Mozart write long and shorter Masses. The dinner concert at the Hohensalzburg Fortress definitely is a tourist event. I presume they play music-for-the-millions dressed in costumes. For coffee I recommend Tomasselli and for dinner Gasthof Elefant or Gasthof Goldgasse.

Do I need to get advanced tickets for the midday organ concert or can I buy them when I arrive at the cathedral? Thank you for helping!

Is it necessary to get tickets for the High Mass on Sunday 12/8/19?

Hi. I'm not sure. But there were regular public masses posted. And a lot of the churches also have confessions on a regular basis. They usually post a sign with the language the priest speaks too. We saw this in Vienna at St. Stephens and a few in Salzburg as well.

Is the 10:00am Sunday Mass at the Cathedral required to make a reservation and payment? Or you just go earlier and try to get the best seats.

We are traveling with family to Salzburg for Christmas in 2017, do we need to make arrangements to attend midnight Mass at the Cathedral or is it on a first come basis? If so, how early should we arrive before the service?

The Cathedral is located in the
Kaepitalplatz , near St Peters church, off Kaigasse street in Old Town. The very narrow street is shared by the Fiakerunternehmen, taxis, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Depending on where you are staying, it is so much easier to walk to the Cathedral. I had a terrific hotel, the Alstadthotel
Kasererbrau, which is located a block from the Dom. The street to the Kaepitalplatz is a another very narrow alley way. A Vietnam restaurant s on the right. Remember to be quiet and respectful of those who are in prayer.

Hi. There seems to be no restrictions on dress for high mass so common sense will serve you well. perhaps no trainers, shorts, tee shirts, short dresses...or too much bare bits.
It would appear wearing dark clothing, especially black, will always be acceptable. Its not always convenient of course to take suits or such when there are strict restrictions on flight luggage maximum weights.
