Nice little area right next to Salzburg Cathedral and at the foot of Honesalzburg Fortress. There's plenty to see here around the square and a major tourist hotspot. The Marien Statue and Pieta are worth looking at, plus Kapitelschwemme is a pretty fountain. Salzburg Cathedral, Residenzplatz and Mozartplatz are all around the square. There's market stalls, plus shops of the foothill on the way up to the fortress. All suitably tourist oriented.

Lastt of all, the fortress makes a spectacular backdrop for any photos. Not a must see if in Salzbur, but likely you'll be passing through to see the main attractions in Salzburg anyway.

We used this piazza as a place to meet the group, whether it was under Mozart's statue or here in front of Neptune's Fountain. It's a beautiful place to relax and enjoy, watching the tourists and others go by.
There are plenty of eateries and places to sit, get out of the train, get out of sun. You choose.
The fountain itself was made by known sculpture Josef Anton Plaffinger and shows Neptune, the god of the sea holding and trident and crown mounted on a seahorse spurting water.
Enjoy this lovely attraction

Kapitelplatz is a huge square in the center of 'old town'. As you walk toward Domplatz you will see a large golden ball with what appears to be a manikin standing on top... I found this to be very odd. This is, however, a good place to view the Salzburg fortress.

Also, in this square is the fountain on Neptune on a Seahorse, however, this was when they chose to clean the pool which was now empty. It somehow loses the affect when empty and workmen inside...

If one wanders arround die Old Town, one cannot miss this one. The suare belonged once to the Cathedral Abbey, but the archbishopric ended in 1803. Slightly aside from the spacious square, Chapter Fountain bears witness to the past: a horse pond was already situated in the center of Chapter Square during the Middle Ages. The new fountain was built under Archbishop Leopold Firmian in 1732 to plans by Franz Anton Danreiter, obviously modeled on Roman fountains. The ramp used by the horses to access the water leads straight up to the group of figures: Neptune, god of the sea, holding a trident and crown, mounted on a seahorse spurting water. The baroque figure was sculpted by Josef Anton Pfaffinger. A chronogram with Archbishop Firmian's coat of arms can be found above the niche. Chapter Square is a place of activity in Salzburg's Old City: people playing chess with oversized chess pieces.

Coming right here, visitors will be able to have a nice view of the Honesalzburg Fortress and also seeing the lovely Salzburg Cathedral.

At the side, there are several makeshift stalls selling souvenirs, food, art and craft and local produces and that attracted a lot of people, especially the tourists. And right in the center of the square, is a unique but interesting monument, a man standing on top of a golden ball and walking ahead shortly, you can even play a chess game on the floor!

It's a bustling and busy square but worth coming here to visit and immerse in the local culture, history and lifestyle!

Discovering Kapitelplatz & Kapitelschwemme. We quickly visited the beautiful 'Kapitelplatz & Kapitelschwemme' square as we left the Salzburg Cathedral. Actually, it's also quite close to Residenzplatz and Mozartplatz, so feel free to check these out also.

A few things make this square stand out from the rest. First of all, there is an amazing view from the “Neptune and sea-steed” fountain. Secondly, there's a really picturesque view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and mountains in the background. 'It felt like a view out of a magazine!' Lastly, you'll surely notice 'Sphaera' which is a 9 meter high 'emotionless man' on top of a golden sphere. The statue at the top gave us the impression he was gazing at the mountain and Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Finally, we felt blessed for the opportunity to visit and take pictures for our best memories ever!

As a result, we recommend this place. Why not spend a little time here since it's beautiful and picturesque.

The main thing to do in Salzburg is to walk and explore. Most of Old Town is pedestrian only. If you see any vehicles at all, they're few and far between. You'll always find something interesting around the corner. Of course, if and when your legs give up, there's always the horse carriages for the tourists..

There are a lot of statues, monuments and fountains to see as you wander this district, as well as finding endless cafes and shops for places to stop. The fountains are all worth checking out.
