About
Shopping "senza confini" The central theme behind a shopping center. ATRIO is located right at the intersection between Carinthia, Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Here at the intersection of three countries, three languages and three cultures, ATRIO has developed into a platform for the people of these regions. The slogan "shopping senza confini" makes ATRIO the first themed shopping center in Austria and the Alps-Adriatic region. The phrase "senza confini" comes from Italian and means "without borders/limitless".

Atrio is a spacious, but compact shopping center in the outskirts of Villach at the thoroughfare between the Sud Autobahn and the historic center. Since my last review, a couple of years ago, the non-smoking policy has returned, making Atrio attractive again for us. Atrio offers hundreds of free parking spaces in the basement and on the roof, with a very intelligent electronic guidance system, finding you a space even if it is busy. Atrio boast a giant Interspar supermarket and a scala of clothing shops, coffee corners eateries and more. But not long ago Atrio became irresistible, because the famous 'Bierhaus Zum Augustin' from Klagenfurt had opened a branch in Atrio. (at last I would say). Free parking, first class shops and lunch at 'Zum Augustin' is a winning team. A five point rating.

Whenever I get to another country, I need to get a few personal care items as I just don't travel with them. Mostly becaue those type of items are nicer and better priced overseas, but also because there's space I'd rather use for gifts to friends and business associates. I've been here several times and I really love the Spar supermarket in this place. I get most of what I need there, inlcuding gifts for the family, and this time, we raided the deli section for a range of italian smallgoods, fresh rolls, wine and other items for dinner that night. Shopping here is pretty good as well and there are some decent cafes. Public transport isn't to great here and a car is preferred, but there's lots of parking and it's easy to get around for all ages and abilities. You can actually get in and out pretty quickly and with minimal fuss.

On the ground floor you will find a small playground for children under 4, that only has one entrance which leads out directly at a cafe, so you can easily have a sit there. Closeby (also seen from the cafe) is a sculpture kids climbed on when we were there and also a rink, where children were running with baloons. Nice relaxed atmosphere.

In my previous review I mentioned with pleasure, that Atrio was completely smoke-free, anticipating the new law, prohibiting smoking in public areas, coming into force in Austria per January 1st 2018. But, under pressure of the junior party in the new Austrian government, the introduction of this law has been postponed indefinitively, defying European rules. (Friends in Carinthia tell me that the leader of this polical party is a notorious smoker). To my disappointment the management of Atrio have allowed, that separation walls have returned in some restaurants, where behind these walls smoking is allowed again. Remember that in these restaurant areas food is stored and prepared. It is sad that the management of Atrio have buckled under the presure of smokers and have implemented this regressive no-smoking policy.

Since my husband was working in Villach for over 1 year, we visited this mall a lot both for groceries at Interspar and the mall boutiques, as well as dining at the restauarants. Interspar not only has a huge selection of meat, cheese, produce, alcohol, bakery, and all your other groceries, but lots of other stuff like kitchenware, toys, holiday supplies, & more. The entire shopping center is very clean and organized. Great selection of shops in the mall as well as great places to eat! Our favorite is Running Sushi where Chinese foods runs by you on a conveyer belt and you just grab what you want. It's all you can eat for a set price and quite fun and delicious! There's also a nice Italian restaurant called Al Dente.

I valued Atrio already as one of the best and customer friendly shopping centers in Europe (See my previous reviews), but now Atrio is perfect: Smoking has been stamped out completely! Until a short time ago apparently the law in Austria allowed smoking in closed areas in Atrio. This meant that, while in the shopping center smoking was not allowed, in the eateries, behind closed doors, smoking was going on if awareness of the harmfulness of smoking hadn't penetrated there. Therefore, this smoking was also going on in the same place where food was prepared or displayed. But during this visit I noticed that the partitioning off of the restaurants to the great Atrio hall were all removed and there was no smoking anywhere. Thank you Atrio management.
