The is a beautiful area. I was here in a total downpour Of rain. And I still thought it was great. I’d like to go back on a sunny day.

I really like this lake and whenever it fits in, I come by to take a swim. I mean what's not to like? Great view, refreshing temperature and good water quality. The only minus is that on many days it's badly overcrowded, especially on warm weekend days when it is hard to find a parking space anywhere nearby. On such days I sometimes go to one of the smaller lakes in the surrounding to avoid the crowds.

Lovely area with many small towns around the perimeter which one can visit by traveling in both directions around the lake. The roads are narrow and the locals don't seem to mind but being a visitor and not used to driving on the right hand side, it was quite intimidating. We stayed on a farm in the mountains which had a view over the lake, which was exceptional.

My friends and I were enjoying holidays in Zurich and then Hainburg, Austria; we arrived at lake Attersee while our car stopped in a gas station. We see the area , it was amazing and view of the lake and surrounding were spectacular. It is located near Salzburg. However, it is bit far from highway.

Really clear water and amazing views from almost everywhere. Several public beach areas and one paid beach club spot. Don't miss the not-far-enough-away Jaguar Swingers Club! ;)

Rode around the lake on a motorbike. Its quite an attractive area but there are lots of private places for sunbathers etc. I am a lake person and this one is busy but comparing to Zell am See well there is no comparison. I am glad I took the time to visit and there are some beautiful places to stop and take in the view. Lots of boats on the water and lots of swimmers. Great place though.

While on holiday with Leger Holidays, my wife and I opted out of a days planned excursion, and visited Attersee instead. Considering it was only 10 minutes by train from St Georgen im Attergau where we staying, and the holiday being in the Austrian Lakes, it was surprising that despite being one of Austria's largest lakes it was not included in the Leger itinerary. Glad we made the decision, would not have missed it for the world.
Arriving at Attersee's railway station, the lake is a short walk away, we had a coffee while we waited for the lake cruise boat to arrive. We went on a 2hr 35mins circular tour of the South (Sud) Lake, the weather was perfect, so the views were spectacular, especially the imposing Schaffberg at the southern end of the lake.
There are drink, food and toilet facilities available on board.
After disembarking, we had a meal at one of the many lakeside restaurants before having an hour just sitting and relaxing. and the catching the train back

We visited the lake in August, and regretted the decision. Parking is very difficult around the lake and costly at times. There is a free car park in Kammer Am Attersee next to the police station, but get there early it gets full quickly. Compared with the rest of Austria this area appears significantly more expensive than the rest. The lake itself is ok to swim in and said to be the warmest of all the lakes but it can be difficult to get to it. You can hire boats on the lake. We would suggest visiting some of the slightly smaller lakes that are close to Attersee instead.

If i had to take ONE picture--from the 9,000 I took while in Austria--and turn it into a postcard, THIS may be it!
It. Is. Amazing!
We rented a car (in Vienna) to drive towards Salzburg and into Germany (to see the Eagle's Nest) and stopped at Attersee on the way home.... i have NEVER seen an inland lake so turqoise (like the mediterranean or carribean) in my life. The mountains... the WATER.... the views. There's a fantastic (pay) beach area right in town--complete with changing rooms, water slide, docks, wading pool, etc. We weren't able to stay for long but it may have been the most magical place I'd ever been. Quiet, quaint, absolutely picturesque. It's alpine water, so it's gonna be REFRESHING, but it's SO clean and SO blue and it was absolutely totally worth the stop.
If you can't stop here, i'd recommend ANY of the "lake-towns" along the way! Take an afternoon rest! Take a swim! get some food! RELAX!
