Among the 21 departments and institutions of the Joanneum Universal Museum, founded as the Joanneum in 1811, the Armoury is in a class of its own. Attracting around 55,000 visitors annually, it is the Joanneum's most-visited institution without an exhibitions role. Moreover, as the largest historic armoury in the world, it is a living memorial to a chequered, conflict-ridden past, whose bogeymen and prejudices are still with us.

A horse in full armour is impressive

If they fleshed it out with a few paintings, records of battles or other related artefacts that would make it more interesting.

If you're into military histories and generally love armours, the Styrian armoury is for you. It takes anywhere between 30 mins to 60 mins to walkthrough all the four floors, and it is well-worth investing in a 24hour Joanneum's card to access this and the other major museums in Graz. There is a slight smell in this armoury from all... More

Yes, take guided tour. It is much interesting then strolling around on your own. One of the amazing facts that you learn this way is that most of the items have not been actually collected for the display, but are the leftovers of the actual inventory which have been left in the armory after such weapons were no longer needed/used.... The place is really interesting. But without a guide it is completely random. That's why you should check the time there are guided tours since it's just possible to go inside with guides. But you won't find much more that you see on the pictures. Still interesting and worth a visit.

the guide was well educated in history, it doesn`t make sense to visit this museum without a guided tour

It's been few years ago we have visited this museum and since then we always talk about it when in Graz. Such a small town with such an impressive little museum.

This is really something to see and our guide was fantastic, I wish we had stayed there all day to speak with him - he really knew his stuff so well. My two sons really loved this place as we had come to Graz especially to see this museum. If you are into this sort of period there is absolutely... More

The collection was amazing. Makes you want to put on some armor. It was a nice place to slow the day down and really imagine what it may have been like back in the day.

It was worth a visit. As student we got discount, however, museum is not that expensive. You can really see some cool stuff and guide will tell you many interesting things. My favorite part was a horse armor. ;)

Unique world class moment in history. Arms and armour for 6,000 men from mid the 17th century. If you know your stuff, avoid the guided tour, but if you are just generally interested do take it. Outstanding attraction
