The building was designed by the architect Charles Garnier and commissioned by Prince Charles III in the 1870s. The theatre is located on the Mediterranean coast. In front of the building are busts of composers Berlioz and Massenet by the Russian sculptor L.A. Bernstam.

Without a doubt the most beautiful theater I have ever seen. Very comfortable armchairs, extremely suggestive decorations, perfect acoustics. It looks like a theater from times gone by, an authentic jewel.

Attached to the casino, this opera building is just as impressive, if not more so. It’s view overlooks Port Hercules. There is an attractive terraced courtyard in front. Although I did not attend the opera, the exterior is most definitely worth a look, especially if visiting the adjacent casino.

Teach your children everything we have taught ours: that the Earth is the mother of all. Everything that happens to Earth also happens to her children. Spitting on the ground is spitting on yourself. The Earth does not belong to man, it is man who belongs to the Earth. Everything is connected, like the blood that unites a family. What happens to the Earth also happens to the children of the Earth

If you can get tickets during the short opera season - try to go. World class opera in a beautiful intimate space at prices to make Covent Garden attendees weep!
Alas drinks in interval grossly overpriced !

On our trip to Nice, we booked a night at the Opera in Monte-Carlo - - how cool is that! The opera was wonderful and there are no bad seats. It is a small intimate theatre that has views of the ocean when the drapes are open. It was fabulous. Would recommend you arrive early, have lunch at the Cafe de Paris (next door) and then have a drink ($25 each drink, but worth the experience) at the Hotel Paris (also next door). It was a 5 Star experience!!!! R

another attraction was to enjoy the ballet, which was performed in the same building that houses the casino.
once you step inside you are transported back to another era.
the room where the ballet, as well as opera is performed, is faced with gold glitter, with the two royal boxes on either side.
the seats we had were unbelievable- FIRST ROW-DEAD CENTER!
There were two different ballets, with an intermission between, where refreshments were sold.
prior to you going, please check the website for when either the ballet or opera is there-they only have performances a few times a year at this facility.
the best way to travel there is either by walking or by taxi-most of the taxi's are Mercedes, all very well kept, with friendly drivers. most of the fares in Monte Carlo are around 10 euro.
the prices for these performances are quite reasonable, the Princess of Monaco, funds the fine arts.
put this on your list of things to do.

The opera is a really nice building right outside of Casino Square. It’s worth a picture stop if you are close by.

I have visited this opulent building on numerous occasions, attending classical opera or concert performances, but also on a less formal ones, like silent movie (The General with Buster Keaton) accompanied by full orchestra of The House or concert by German band playing vegetable instruments. Each occasion different, public different, but charm of Old Lady persestently felt.
Magnificent venue, with excellent acoustics and comfortable seats.I can not remember visiting even most reputable opera houses (La Scala,Nice etc.),which are kept to such a high standards.Formal event public is very formal as well, money do not speak, but shouts loudly-this is such a place.Pitty, that Salle Blanche, down in the Casino, which was used as a beautifuL setting for a drink before and/or couple drinks after, has been anected by game tables and lost its past function. But money speaks louder than art....

The biggest question we had going to an opera at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo was how to dress; everything we read on line offered confusing generalities, often ending with just ‘appropriate dress.’ We packed formal evening wear, cocktail wear, business dress and business casual, prepared for just about anything. And that is what we found—just about anything. We saw only one dressy gown, a few cocktail outfits, a lot of pants and nice shirts, some causal wear and a few jeans. It was cold at the end of February (when we attended) so we did see a few expensive furs but mostly on the much older crowd; we also saw what appeared to be a group from a recently docked cruise ship who were wearing ordinary, comfortable tourist garb. Our take-away: don’t worry about what you will wear, just go and enjoy the opera. NOTE: there are specific performances which require special dress; they are identified.
If you can get tickets, that is. This lovely, tiny theater has less than 600 seats available and apparently reserves at least some for cruise ship passengers for some performances. The website has recently added the option to pick seats via the internet, an excellent step to modernize the process. The opera season runs from January through March and attracts some of the best singers and biggest names in the opera world. Tickets go on sale in November. Ballet and special performances are held in the theater during the rest of the year.
The seat comfort is fine but sight lines are easily obscured by the person seated in front of you. My bad luck was to sit behind a canoodling couple who basically blocked 90% of the stage but my opera partner had equal trouble seeing past the person seated in front of her. Considering how hard it is to get tickets, it’s a pity not to be able to experience both the acting and the singing. Obviously, seats in the first two rows of either the first or second tier are preferable. Also note that additional seats are created when pull down chairs are extend into the aisle way on the second tier, effectively blocking the aisles (definitely a no-no in many countries because of fire codes). The drop down seats can also be hazardous during intermission as you try to leave or return to seats.
Since this is a jewel box theater, it is easy for the orchestra to overwhelm the space; singers, on the other hand, are in luck if they don’t have big, booming voices because they aren’t needed. If instruments and singers are well balanced, expect a fine performance.
The opera proper, known as the Salle Garnier in honor of the architect, is located inside the famous Casino; there is a separate entrance to each on the inside of the casino building. (There is also a private entrance on the west side for the royal family and guests.) The interior is ornate, with gold leaf, bronzes, friezes, crystals, and red velvet.
One special note is the dire bathroom facilities. There is a dreadful shortage of stalls for women, even for a theater of less than 600, at the bottom of a stairway. The line during intermission stretches all the way up the stairs and back into the lobby. (As usual, there was no line for the men’s restroom.)
There is a coat check but use of it is not mandatory so feel free to carry in your jackets rather than wait for the interminable retrieval.
We enjoyed our night at the opera and would certainly go back to another performance if we ever return to Monte Carlo (and could get tickets). The theater is certainly a thing of beauty—but not so special as to require a special, separate trip to attend a performance there, unless drawn by a specific work or specific performer (as in our case, with Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, a relative rarity). In either case, get tickets as soon as you can or miss out….

Hi, does anyone know how to purchase box tickets for a show? It seems that any show I search for, the only seats are in the pits.

Hello- we have opera tickets in November for an 8pm show and are wondering about recommendations for dinner beforehand? It seems that most restaurants do not start serving dinner until 7:30pm... ?
