We really enjoyed our trip to Kyrenia Castle which is in the harbour. There is a lot of information in English and plenty to see. The views are lovely and the ship museum is definitely worth within the castle is worth spending some time in. There is a cafe within the castle walls but we did not eat here so cannot comment on that. Allow a minimum of 2 hours for your visit. Recommended.

Was not sure if it would be worth the entrance fee given that many of the monuments in the north have not been maintained. We need not have worried although it has not had alot spent on the structure recently as walking on the top in the wind without sufficient railings emphasises, you feel much safer on the lower levels. There is more to see than first meets the eye although there are few explanation boards to explain the structure other than in the boat museum area.

Despite needing a little TLC, this atmospheric sand coloured fortress is a maze of fortifications, and internal store rooms / barracks. Kyrenia castle is a stronghold on the Northern shores of Cyprus, and with the in-country castles at St Hilarion, and Buffavento, it provided a formidable barrier fo pirates, foreign armies.
This is a heavy duty castle, situated directly with the harbour of Girne (Kyrenia), and in the heat of the afternoon we struggled, but it would be madness not pay a visit.

As a castle, it does not really give much that you can't find in many old castles, and is not very well preserved. The great things are the views of the harbour, the courtyard which is a lovely place, and the church. The church used to be separate from the castle but then the castle expanded and enveloped it. There is clearly a lot of history in here, although it has been severely damaged over the years.

We enjoyed this tour. The guide was knowledgeable- again it was quite a drive from Protaras. The views from the abbey were lovely though. However, it wasn’t clear where our pick up point from the abbey would be after we got on the coach, we got lucky as we saw our guide, so maybe clearer instructions on where we’d be picked up would be helpful. You go to Kyrenia and we walked around the castle and saw the ship wreck. The guide gave you some information before letting you explore yourself. After doing that you don’t really get much time to explore the town itself but it just seemed like shops so it didn’t bother us too much. This was a 1 pm pick up and you go for dinner at about 7/7.30 so make sure you eat before, or bring snacks! The evening meal was nice and although they weren’t ready for four vegetarians they rustled up some lovely veggie kebabs and cous cous. You eat at a big table with others but it wasn’t intrusive and people pretty much kept to themselves. Before dinner we walked from one part of the old Nicosia wall to the other and last the check point. It took about 20 minutes which was fine for us but some with mobility issues might struggle - it is flat though. Remember to bring your passports for this tour. The guide checked we had ours when we got on.

Crossing the border by foot is so easy from Leda street, a taxi stop is a minutes walk away. The fare to Kyrenia was €30 and so simple, once you arrive at the castle be prepared for some steep steps if you want to climb to the top trust me it’s well worth it. The sheer size of this medieval fortress is stunning and the views amazing. Anyone visiting Cyprus make the journey you won’t be disappointed and on an even positive note the cost of living I.e food, beer, wine etc is a lot cheaper.
And the best homemade lemonade is available in the courtyard !

Interesting to see, the views from the top are spectacular. However on a hot day it is not ideal as it is very hot in the exhibition halls as well as walking around the castle in the sun.
There is an entry fee of 50 lira for adults and 20 lira for kids.

Looms over the harbour at its Easterly end. If you are not guided at least a brief read of its history before you visit is a good idea as it has developed through many ages and owners. You can walk the battlements BUT some areas are fairly rough stone (none loose) and in parts without railings. Be confident and walk as far as you can as the views are very good (the bit out to the flags is a bit hairy).

The castle has a pleasant shaded coffee shop.

The Castle contains the Shipwreck museum which is a must see.
