    Steep hills and beautifil views
As mentioned before, the hill climb ins steep and not all that easy, I did the mistake of going from the Lefkosa side and ended up with a walk from the Grne and Minareliköy side. I do recomend that you start your walk early ( I Started at 12.00 which was far to warm) It si definately not anything for the person that is afraid of hights as there are several parts where the path is a bit sketchy. You need to be in good condition to make it up therre. Once there, you will have a magnificent view over both Girne and Lefkosa.

A 3-year old can do it!
Yes, it's a steep and hot climb to the top but if my 3-year old daughter can do it, anyone can! We took our time and had plenty of pit stops taking lots of water onboard. the climb is well worth it for the fantastic views over the sea and Nicosia plain.

The must visit castle in Cyprus (but not in summer!)
My favourite castle and touristic site to visit in North Cyprus. Be prepared for a hike up but it is so worth it! My friends son counted the stairs and it was 600 odd I think he got to. You can see both sides of the Kyrenia mountain range at the same time in places. Also had amazing rolling clouds on one visit. Stunning, stunning views all the way. Love it.

    Great view worth the trip
This was an awesome view and well worth the hike. Take water / drink and fairly good shoes. The path can be tricky but it’s not a difficult as was made out. It’s mostly well made but lacks maintenance here and there. The view from the top is stunning. I had a whip snake fall from a tree nearby but it was more scared and shocked of me than I it. I’ve dined out on that tale a few times. All in all well worth the effort. Do your history on the castle beforehand as the info board at the start isn’t great.

    Spectacular views……
One can drive in to this castle some 6kms off a main road or walk along a heavily littered tarmac track to the start of the climb on a good path to the castle itself. The ascent takes about 25 mins and offers spectacular views. Buffavento is another of those spectacular ruins that encapsulates the Crusading period with battle hardened knights defending the Island from the Arabs and the many others who threatened its shores. We walked the six kilometres in and out, but were saddened by the amount of litter and general waste spread about the route. The authorities either need to restrict the use of this road to stop anymore fly-tipping or clean it up.

You'll need s car to get there and it's a 20 minute hike up towards the castle so I suggest you go early morning or afternoon. It's worth it though Because you will be rewarded with the amazing views. Not recommended for kids under 7.

If you are travelling by car you will need to pass a very narrow and dangerous road. Afther that you need climb up to the montain approx 30 minutes to the top. However you will be revarded with really picturesque view from the top. Castle is also very nice ofc.

We hired out a Ford Focus car and had two attempts at getting to the castle
Firstly from the Nicosia plains side yes it’s signposted from the main road but around 20 minutes into the journey we passed where the Turkish flag is on the mountain side a small sign put us up to a village then by a fork at Kaynakköy village we headed up towards with much wheel spin and crawling until Panagia Apsinthiotissa we entered a large car park with what looked like a disused camping site also there was a monastery.
Of note the road from where the flag was on the hillside got rather pot holes and dirt track.
With no one to ask we ventured up the road hillside that got more and more difficult with the focus so after 10 minutes of bang crunch wheel spin we gave up … maybe a 4x4 would of tackled it ? If this was a correct road to the castle ?
Next attempt was from the main road through the pass after stopping off at the Buffavento taverna we then headed sharp right up a small tarmac road it’s signed 6k to the castle.
From the start the road rises steeply and around 2.5 k in gets narrow pot holes and becomes tedious enough to have me driving at less than 5mph head in the window looking for obstacles etc.
Within 15 minutes of what I’d call hard concentration driving in a focus no passing points double reverse bends with shear drops it got the better of us .
I’m unsure who would of given way meeting another car coming down so a mega point turn we headed back.
Although many have endured and made it there I would more inclined to hike up to the castle from the main road but 6k in august seems a long haul in the intense heat.
We could just make out in the very far distance what looked like the remains.
Is it worth it. ?? Maybe ?? The views would be awesome .
Yes it’s the highest castle bastion in Cyprus slowly crumbing away to the elements but the most enduring difficult one to surpass
Sorry for the long review but some readers might find this usual
We tried and failed …. But had a good shot at it twice.
