Beautiful Gothic cathedral turned into an Ottoman mosque and as an architectural structure combining the best of both worlds. Pleasant welcome.

The history is absolutely fascinating! This was built as a Catholic Church but during to the long history of this area it is now a mosque.
You are allowed to enter and it is well it!

As has been said this is a Gothic Cathedral converted into a Mosque after the Ottoman invasion. Any form of Christian decoration has long gone but what that does is allow you to view the architectural construction more easily. Very impressive. This is a shoes off place but is no stricter than that as far as dress is concerned. To my mind the best long distance view of this building is from the old walls where it stands out way above the surrounding structures.

This mosque is converted from a cathedral in the 16. century. The original cathedral is in gothic form and the external structure is beatiful. Although inside of the structure is basic, it has an impressive view from even from a distance.

This is an enormous, beautiful building which dominates the centre of the Old Town. Once a church, it was converted into a mosque.

We visited this place many times. You can see this building was a Christian monastery but later it was converted to a mosque. On the left side of this building you can find an 800 year old tree..

If this building was in Rome you would be facing long queues to get near it. Amazing architecture. Living history.

If you are in Famagusta do go and see it.

This is a prime example of the Christian churches in the North of Cyprus which have been converted into mosques. The conversion has been carried out very sympathetically and a lot of the church architectural features have been retained. The external architecture is impressive, albeit that, if there were the money, it would benefit from renovation. The interior is spectacular. The windows are lovely. The Islamic features are beautiful, and the whole place is so serene. A beautiful place to take a moment in your life to contemplate what it is all about.

The largest former church in Famagusta, built by the French in flamboyant Gothic style, and weathered to gold by the Eastern sun and winds. The Turks added a sleek minaret, and kept the interior empty and white, doing a great service to its sleek ogival arches and columns.
