Visible from far and wide yet so close you could almost touch it, the emblem of Liechtenstein towers over Vaduz on a rock terrace which can be reached along a romantic footpath. The castle was first built some 700 years ago. Since 1712 it has been in the possession of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Furthermore, since 1938 it has been the residence of the prince’s family, so it is not open to the public. The 12th century keep and the structures on the east side are the oldest parts of the castle.

Vaduz Castle is home to the royal family and sits up in the hills, watching over the country. It's a landmark and a tourist attraction too, though you can't enter it. Made out of stone, it is a twenty minute climb and walk from town; take the first right after the cafe near the Visitor Centre. The castle makes for... More

As we were walking through town we kept getting glimpses of the castle sitting high above us. We finished our time in town and decided to drive to the castle. Even though it was snowing we had no problems on our short drive up. We had read about the castle so we knew it was not open to the public... More

Since the prince is still living in the castle you cannot visit it, even driving up there is prohibited.

Schloss Vaduz (the Castle of Vaduz) sits high on top of the town of Vaduz, which actually is the capital of the Principality of Liechtenstein, which borders to Switzerland and Austria. You can drive up to the castle, but unfortunately, you won't be able to enter it, as it is the home of the Prince (Fürst) and his family. It's... More

Nice gothic-renaissance structure above tiny Vaduz – nice to see and for a small hike from the town centre, but it is still inhabited so it is not open to the public.

You cannot enter the castle itself but it is a nice walk up. There is a spot from where you can get a panoramic view of the city. One tip - in Winter wear good snow boots. The tail can get really slippery otherwise.
