About
In 963, Count Sigfried built a castle on the Bock Promontory, the foundation stone of the later city of Luxembourg. In the middle of the 18th century, the Austrians began to build the Bock Casemates. These impressive defences give a better understanding of the great fortress machinery that was the "Gibraltar of the North". The archaeological crypt, didactic antechamber of the casemates, is an additional highlight of the visit. No wonder that the fortress bulwarks and the old town, no less steeped in history, enjoy worldwide renown. In 1994, they were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

- Chris X KZurich, Switzerland25 contributionsAlright for the priceBigger than expected and well maintained, but I was expecting more infos. Maybe I should have picked up a small guide at the start, but I think some signs would be nice to read what the chambers were used for. Pretty sure some were used for goods, prison, ammo depot,.. Now it was just walking around inside a wall. Still cool and interesting, but lacking infosVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2023
- Peter HNewport, United Kingdom354 contributionsSelf guided tourFascinating place to visit, tickets can be purchased on site, no cash accepted - card only. We spent an hour walking around and accepted the complimentary guide offered at reception that had letters which corresponded to letters on the walls so you could find the relevant information. Glad we visited.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 February 2024
- Kim GToronto, Canada1,656 contributionsFascinating Place To VisitVery interesting underground tunnel system from 1500s that is open for exploring. Great views of the valleys on both sides from the large holes where canyons were originally installed. Lots of stairs and uneven paths so make sure to wear good footwear. It was very busy and the queue was long to purchase tickets. Best to purchase them online so you can skip the lines.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 March 2024
- aimeemrobertHouston, Texas89 contributionsMust see. Go at least one hour before closing to get a ticketThe Casemates are underground tunnels carved into the mountainside. They were used in times of war for protection while defending the city. We arrived late so could not purchase the tickets for the tour, but we were able to explore some of the outside tunnels. Cool architecture and great history. One of the highlights of Luxembourg.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 April 2024
- Steph LWellington, New Zealand51 contributionsMust seeGreat chance to explore the old fortifications. Do ensure you have good grip shoes as you are often walking on well worn (smooth) stone which is often damp. Not an accessible experience as there are very narrow and steep stairs. Would be great for hide and seek or laser tag.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024
- fabdogWilliamsburg, Virginia473 contributionsGood start to a city tourWe did the tour of the casemates as part of the Wenzel walk around the city. As noted by others, not accessible with lots of stairs and uneven floors. You get a guide at the beginn8ng with descriptions linked to letters that can be found on the walls to guide you. It's very impressive to think what it took to build this so long ago.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2024
- George C55 contributionsGreat must visitWe enjoyed this, it wasnt what we expected but we enjoyed it. One thing that we didn't know is that they were card only luckily we had our card on us as we were looking to pay cash. It can also get a little confusing so be sure to follow the map to see everything. The views of Luxembourg are great too from this location. It was a little expensive compared to everything else.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 August 2024

the place is worth to visit. However, I booked a guided visit (German / English) The guide was explaining for 10 minutes in German and 2 minutes in English. As I was the only English speaker I offered to go on my own, so the group could be more comfortable, if they refunded my ticket. They said I could go on my own along the visit, but I wont be refunded. So I stayed with the group, and the more we walked, the less the guide was speaking in English, even the rest of the group realised and tried to talk to me. It was shocking and really rude of her. At the end, I was so mad, that I left on my own, but I was so annoyed at her that I couldnt even enjoy the amazing views. Such a waste of time and money.

The Bock casemates can be visited every day, independently. It is possible to take guided tours, ask for timetables.
We booked a time slot, which was preferable because when we went there was a long wait for people without tickets. Once through the entrance gate, you enter the foundations of the castle built in 963 by Count Sigefroid even before the Austrians built what would then be known as the casemate in 1745.
The tunnels are long and wide, narrower in places. We travel through tunnels which give wonderful views of the city, whether on the north side (with a view of the elevator) or the south side (with a view of the Gründ).
Friendly and welcoming staff. Entrance ticket at €8 per person, giving access to the site for approximately 45 minutes. Be careful, some parts are very narrow and the stairs can be difficult at times.
Interesting visit, explanations are given near the entrance and a map makes it easier to find your way through this maze.

Interesting tunnels and lovely viewpoints. However I do object to them only accepting card payments (and thereby forcing many people to incur bank charges). No reason or apology given, no Wifi to enable online purchasing, and no information regarding this restriction either online nor outside the ticket office so we only found out when we reached the front of the queue. We could only enter in the end as a couple offered to pay on card and take cash.

This unique series of tunnels and catacombs is an interesting experience. I wouldn't recommend for anyone with mobility issues as there are lots of different staircases nor for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia as it is extremely cramped in some areas. The casemates offer great views of the city and a walk through history. You can complete the entire venue in 40-60mins.

Part of the fortifications of the old city of Luxembourg. The fortifications included built up stone walls, fortresses, and towers and an extensive series of underground tunnels (casemates). The casemates are dug into a promontory overlooking the historic old city and the Alzette River. This strategic point in Europe was the scene of centuries of battles, with various parts of the fortifications being destroyed and rebuilt many times. With the Treaty of London in 1867, many of the above-ground fortifications were dismantled, but the casemates and some ruins remain. Even if you are unable to enter the casemates (often closed in winter and during the Covid pandemic), you can see and appreciate to some extent while walking past along the Le Chemin de la Corniche.

This is a World Heritage Site.
Luxembourg's old quarters and fortifications. The city itself was founded in 963 and has played a significant role in European history throughout the centuries.
We came during winter so weren't able to visit the tunnels but we were able to walk around the top parts and get some amazing views of the city.
This is a must if you are in Luxembourg.

I got all the way here only to find out that it was closed. There are very few things to do in Luxembourg city, so closing one of the main things is stupid. I made a day trip here from Brussels and found it hard to find many exciting things to do to fill the day. Definitely won't be returning to Luxembourg.

Neither a sign , not the Luxemburg pass or goggle mentioned they are closed. We wasted money on the Luxemburg pass, parking , gas, overpriced food and got a very expensive traffic ticket for being 3 km too fast.

It is an archaeological crypt, a vestige of the duchy's first castle, built in the 10th century. It is a set of labyrinths in the rock that provide different views of the city. I paid 8 euros (adult) to visit and I thought it was worth it. Having to go down and up stairs requires a certain physical disposition and, unfortunately, is not accessible to everyone.

A labyrinth of tunnels dug into the rocky promontory overlooking the city.
They were designed as a defensive system which, during the two World Wars, managed to provide shelter for many people.
The interiors are bare and dark.
The panoramic views that can be seen from the numerous openings are very beautiful.
