About
The Barrakka Panoramic Lifts are located inside the ditch of the fortifications of Valletta, and it links Lascaris Wharf to St. Peter and Paul Bastion and the Upper Barrakka Gardens. It allows access from the Grand Harbour to the Valletta city. It was first constructed in 2012, on the site of a previous lift (1905 - 1973). In 1905, the lift was constructed out of steel, and it was 60 m high. The lift had two cabins that could hold 12 passengers and tickets cost ½d for military personnel and 1d for other clients. Malta's independence in 1964, took a toll on the lifts as a significant amount of the lift's clients were British military personnel and employees. There were significant losses, stopped operation in 1973 and lifts were demolished in 1983. Plans to construct similar steel structure lifts initiate in 2004, were designed by the local firm Architecture Project and inaugurated in 2012. The lifts facilitate access to the historic centre of Valletta to/from the Grand Harbour.

- Roslyn138Wrexham, United Kingdom652 contributionsExcellent ValueWe were on an Eastern Med cruise and had two days in Valletta. I had previously read about the Barrakka lift, and it was only a short walk from the cruise terminal. An excellent way of getting to the upper Barrakka gardens , and then entrance to the city via the Victoria gate. Excellent value for money as only a Euro for both journey - why bother walking !Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2023

It is only a short ride but save you a 10- 15 min walk each. The ticket cost 2 euros - it is on you, if you use it one or two ways.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 July 2023
- RDGVirginia Beach, Virginia135 contributionsA few hours in MaltaMalta was a stop for our cruise ship heading from Greece to Barcelona. Didn’t expect much as we were only scheduled to be there 8 hours. Found a pleasant surprise with there hop on hop off buses. Approximately 25 euros pp gets you access to three different lines. We basically toured the entire island in 6.5 hours. Never got off the buses; just took in the scenes and took a lot of pictures. The island is bigger than we thought and very well to do. The buses are the thing to do if your just stopping for the day. Go through the cruise terminal; turn right past the cabs and the buses are right there.Visited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 11 July 2023
- soinic2,013 contributionsExcellent start 🤗Instead of walking up the stairs to Valletta old town, we took the lift. Great panoramic view if you step out. With temperatures over 30° Celcius, this easy start to our self organized Valletta discovery walk was a great start. Close to the cruise ships port.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 August 2023
- Ronald RStromness, United Kingdom257 contributionsCheap and quick, sometimes with great views over the ferries to the 3 cities.Cheap way to go from ferries and lower road to upper Barrakka gardens and into Valletta's main areas. 1 euro for return ticket, saves so many steps and time. Plus if you always go into the one next to the harbour the views are awesome. The lift is quick and reassuringly quiet. Good experience well worth doing when in Valletta.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 December 2023

When you are in the Upper Barrakka Gardens - you will see , when looking towards the Grand Harbor - this construction.
The Barrakka Lift - built in 2012 end of the year - is replacing the old Barrakka lift that was function between 1905 and 1973 - it was demolished in 1983.
So to connect the gardens with the Grand Harbor - fast - this lift was constructed and since 2012 - December - is operating.
You can make the round trip for 1 Euro - so it is not expensive.
Overall an interesting experience - when in Malta take the lift- the Barrakka lift ... it is worth it

Great way to get from upper gardens to lower harbour level. Only 1 euro for two trips and we’ll worth the experience. Great view if you are lucky enough to be in the lift on your own

We wanted to use the lift as a novelty not because we needed too. It’s €1 each which is nothing. We got it down to street level

What a hidden gem! For a Euro you go up in a lift (expected) and find yourself in a beautiful, calm spot overlooking the bay and some big guns that are used for official gun salutes. We were there at sunset and it was stunning.

The quickest way from waterfront to the beautiful gardens above.
We had previously walked the longer way around which was also ok but this allows more time at the top.
It’s only €1 per person “round trip” (up and down).
No queues and only 30 secs or so top to bottom

Can I buy advance tickets to the lift to avoid standing in line? Because I need 35 tickets. Is there usually a long line to get on the lift? How long is the ride up? Thank you

No queue when we used the lift last month. Probably takes only 30 seconds. Not sure if you can buy in advance, sorry. .

I don't think so. Access to the war rooms is from the Upper Barrakka garden. The lift goes down to the 3 cities ferry terminal.

There is still only one ticket machine in operation. The other one is still awaiting parts from Italy. This has been the situation for two years.

Ticket access machines at the bottom were not working early October just left open, but the pay machine was. Only one euro or your ferry ticket. The subsidy must be enormous, its not a lot to pay.

I would like to know if this is open on a Sunday and what else is open on Sunday in Valletta Malta as we are arriving my cruise ship on a Sunday?

Yep, Open on Sunday. Cathedral is more than worthy. Lascaris War Rooms as well. Just for mention a few. Don't think shops are open, but the city is really amazing and for sure you can enjoy both cafes and restaurants.
