The Saluting Battery is one of Malta's most vibrant visitor attractions where history is brought to life daily! Located high along Valletta's eastern historic ramparts it enjoys unrivalled spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and its surrounding fortified towns. It is also perhaps the oldest saluting battery still in operation anywhere in the world. Here one can see a fully restored gun powder magazine, an artillery side-arm store, a handsome collection of original muzzle-loading artillery , ammunition and equipment and get a close-look at the saluting guns. The battery is equipped with audio-guides but guided torus in English are also available three times a day at 11.00, 12.30 And 15.00Hrs.

Make sure you visit at least at 11:30 to watch the noon day gun firing ceremony. It is 3€, so it is less crowded than the gardens above. You will get very close to the canons for some good photo opportunities.

Saw the battery as part of another tour but the display at the back of the site showing the history of the battery is fascinating

We visited today primarily to see a close up of the gun firing. Very enjoyable, took some good pictures. We stayed and did the tour with Alfred, who was both informative and amusing, with plenty of anecdotes. Well worth a visit and we took Freddie...More

This is a regular treat, when the cannons are fired at hourly intervals or so on the hour ,outside on the battery terrace a few hundred yards inside the city gates. This is close to a famous Malta restaurant which is housed in an old...More

Get here before 12 to enjoy the midday firing of the canon, which is done with genuine military precision. You can then join a tour of the battery and associated exhibits. Alfred was our guide who was very knowledgeable and engaging. Oh, and don't leave...More

It was interesting to see the canons fires and was a pleasant 10 minutes of history. Above the battery is a nice garden with several memorials that are nice to wander round. There is also a little cafe. Avoid the toilets if you can! Then...More
