In front of the Palace of the Grand Master there is a building that was built in the early seventeenth century to house the "Guard Regiment", the personal guard of the Grand Master of the Order. In the nineteenth century the British added a neoclassical portico that when we were in Malta was under restoration. At the sides of the building there are also two beautiful fountains that are worth a look.

This building is located on St. George's Square directly opposite the Grandmasters Palace. Its origins date to 1603 when a guardhouse was built to house the personal guards of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John. 200 years later when the British controlled Malta, the building housed the guards of the Governor of Malta. The portico with six supporting columns and a relief of the British coat of arms was erected in 1814 when Sir Thomas Maitland was Governor. The portico, coat of arms and inscription are considered to be one of the most iconic symbols of British rule in Malta. A translation of the inscription reads;- "The love of the Maltese and the voice of Europe assigned these Islands to great and unconquered Britain. A.D. 1814".
In 1987 the building became annex of the Office of the Attorney General.
Also of interest, on the Square the building is single floor, but at the rear, where it abuts Strait Street, it is three floors due to the land slope.

Nice Guard House

The nice building opposite Grandmasters Palace was originally guards house to accommodate the personal guards of Grand Master of the Order of St. John. The Coat of Arms on the external facade of the building indicated the British rule in Malta. From 1987 onward, the building became an annex office to the Attorney General.

Right opposite the Grandmasters Palace this building stands out due to the columns that sit prominently at the front. I was unsure if you could enter this place, but it was nice to look at
