OPEN MONDAY - SUNDAY from 09.00 Till 17.00Hrs (last admission at 16.30Hrs). The mosaic pavements in the Domvs Romana at Rabat rank among the finest and oldest mosaic compositions from the western Mediterranean, alongside those of Pompeii and Sicily. They were discovered in 1881 just outside Mdina in the remains of a rich and sumptuously decorated town house of the Roman period. This museum was one of the very first to be opened to the public in Malta. The small museum of the Domvs Romana is built around the remains of a rich, aristocratic roman town house (domvs) which was accidentally discovered in 1881. Although very little remains from the house itself, the intricate mosaics which survived for centuries, as well as the artefacts found within the remains, are testimony of the original richness and story of this fantastic abode. The current Museum building does not only preserve some of the most precious Roman remains but also provides a glimpse into the lives of a Roman domestic household, from the actual division of roles in a Roman family, to fashion, education, entertainment, food and drink.

The Domus Romana is a Roman villa in Rabat. The site is small and consists of a small museum and some wonderful mosaic floors. Remains of walls can be seen outside, but it is not possible to walk among the ruins. Students get a discount

This is a weak site if you are used to the mosaics of the eastern med but in Malta terms it is very significant. The house which is just outside the city of Medina shows how a roman family would have lived. It give a...More

It was very interesting but very small only a two rooms museum. The mosaic is really good with nice colours and also you can find information about the Roman period in Malta. Notice, that you can see the ruins(not the mosaic) from the street if...More

Apart from the mosaics (which were not spectacular) and the remains of the statues, there was not a great deal to arouse the visitor's interest. There was an area of exposed walls and stonework behind the reception area, but no explanation of how it related...More

The walls are covered with a lot af interesting information about Roman life in Malta and the finds made whilst excavation of the site. Within the house there are incomplete mosaic floors, some less than others.

I adore mosaics, so we always make an effort to visit museums/sites that feature them. This museum is conveniently located just outside the walls of Mdina, and has a beautifully preserved large/colorful floor mosaic (see photo) along with a nice display showing various patterns.

Outside of the walls of Mdina is this Roman townhouse. The mosiac floors are amazing and there are some wonderful finds that are shown in glass cases. There are good explanation boards at strategic places which describe what you are seeing and in some cases,...More

Learned a surprising amount in my short visit to this small museum, built atop the ruins of a roman home. The museum also contains historic information about the Muslim cemetery at the same site. The tile floor and information pieces are well presented.
