The Whale Museum in Madeira is currently one of the most innovative museums of its kind in the world. Holder of a valuable museographic collection, this space rigorously documents the history of whaling in Madeira. Through stereoscopic 3D movies and among models of whales and dolphins in full size, visitors can learn about the life of these fantastic creatures and their marine environment in a fun and interactive way. The Whale Museum also promotes research on cetaceans and its preservation and study of the history of whaling in Madeira.

The toilets couldn't cope, the museum couldn't cope. We couldn't cope and quickly left. First, I don't like audio guides, I find them distracting. I liked the way these reacted to our location, except when they got it wrong! At times, the sound cut out without any reason. Next I like to be able to choose my own way through... More

Excuse the pun but this museum is a bit of a white elephant. It looks like it had millions thrown at it when money was plentiful by some random EEC project. It is very low on content and high on superfluous stuff that either doesn't work or not really needed. For example, zone activated commentary that randomly stops and starts... More

Thank you for your visit and it’s with great regret that we find that you didn’t like the Madeira Whale Museum. Visits are made through the use of an audio-guide, a way for every visitor to explore the museum at their pace and according to their interests, because content is automatically activated. Besides that, in all exhibitions rooms we have... More

Visitors are equipped with audio guides. There is an historical exhibition of whale hunting in the mid-20th Century in Madeira. Later halls show how whales are mammals that have returned to the sea. Also environmental issues are covered. There are a lot of films with a load of information - take time with you and don't expect to cover it... More

Called here ahead of going to the airport, just a short run along the motorway. It is a nice modern facility and well presented. The commentary headsets were difficult to use - they automatically trigger as you go round but this was very 'hit and miss'. There are 2 parts to the museum - firstly a commemoration of their whaling... More

We went to this place as we took tour with a car around island. The museum are looking very nice. Unfortunatly when we came to museum they had some problems with electronics so half of the movies were unavailable. The modela of the wales are looking impressive.

Good, modern museum split into 2 parts - one about the history of whaling in Madeira and the other about the physiology and life of Cetaceans. We found the second part to be the most interesting since we find the concept of whaling in any form a bit upsetting. Still it is social history. Overall it was good day out... More

We spend there 3 hours vs. planned 30 minutes. Museum provides informations not only about whales but as well about the culture and technology related to whale hunting. I believe everyone interested in wild nature, the life on island in the middle of the ocean, sailing, boating, local culture, etc. should reserve 2+ hours there.

We travelled from Funchal to Canical by bus which was very easy to accomplish. The museum was easy to find and on the day we visited it had a promotion on of 50% off so very good value! Normally adults are 10 Euros each. The museum consists of 2 main rooms, the first telling of the history of whale hunting... More

This is our 5th visit as we continue to take visitors here. The Whale Museum is now even better than before. Lots to see, read and listen to. Very friendly and helpful staff. Sandwich in café after was delicious and reasonably priced, again lovely staff member.

This wonderful experience is somewhat understated but lies along the coastal road through Canical in Madeira. Strangely the building is fairly low key but is a big grey square. Once inside for a small fee a very interesting and informative experience awaits but be prepared to learn just how brutal humans have been to these wonderful gracious mammals, highly recommended...
