Easy to travel to via Bus 11 to bus stop Hofgardar and a 10 to 15 minute walk to the lighthouse along the coast. The light house is only accessible during some months due to bird migration and nesting near the lighthouse. It seems to be closed in the Spring (May 1st I think) to the Fall.

It is a nice walk along the path on the coast from the harbour area. You can't walk to the actual lighthouse unless it is low tide, and then a lot of the area around is roped off. At night this is a great area to view the Northern Lights. One night our tour took us 100kms to view the... More

My boyfriend and I decided to walk out to Grotta lighthouse from downtown Reykjavik on a clear evening to see the sunset. It took us around 40 minutes to walk there and once we were there the views did not disappoint. We watched the sunset over the lighthouse and sat on one of the benches in the area. It was... More

We drove out here as our first experience with nature in Iceland- it's an easy 7-10 minute drive from the city center. The tide was out and we walked to the lighthouse along the beach. It's the end of the peninsula where Reykjavik is located, so you can see mountains in all directions. We came back later that night as... More

We had paid for a Northern Lights Tour but our tour bus either didn't come or left all 9 of us. The meeting location on our reservation was not the location they apparently were picking us up from. Luckily we had rental cars so we were able to drive to the lighthouse, as recommended by a few other tourists the... More

Beautiful view, very pretty beach surrounding. DO NOT pay for a tour. The number 11 city bus from Reykjavic will take you there for 440 Krona, about $4. It drops you off within a mile walk of the Lighthouse, and the walk is really pretty. Do Not spend $129, NOT worth that at all. You can walk around the whole... More

We were staying close to the Grotta Lighthouse and so it was easy for us to visit the area. When we visited in February / March there was high aurora activity predicted. Our first visit at about 22.00 was not a great experience - there were so many cars and literally hundreds of people coming and going - as this... More

It was pretty windy on my way to the lighthouse, be sure to have proper cloths and shoes. Definatelly worth of walk! Be sure to go there when there is low tide. A lot of birds nest near. There is a graphite picture on the lighthouse.

Instead of paying for an overpriced tour on the off change that you would see the lights, we took the local bus to one of the furthest stops and walked the short 10 minutes further to this lighthouse. It is one of the darkest places in the city and consequently, those who know about it may also be there in... More
