The red cliffs at Heidmork Nature Reserve are amazing! The colors of the volcanic remains are just beautiful. Be careful of the horse droppings though, because they are everywhere due to the horse rental tours down the road. A great place to stop and take a hike though without driving too far out of Reykjavik. No charge to enter

The north area has some geologic formations worth seeing - very colorful & raw. The downside of this area for hiking is that the path is churned up from horses and they have left smelly gifts all over the place. It is somewhat expected as that part of the park is a designated horse path. The other more southerly paths near the lakes are for hikers only and are beautiful and tranquil. There is no cost to visit. Most of the roads are gravel is good condition. There are picnic areas. We could not find the park map-indicated toilet.

Heidmork is a beautiful paradise outside of the capital of Iceland. It's really nice place to bring your family and get the taste of Icelandic nature. Especially the red hills called Raudholar (Rauðhólar) which you can see when you drive into Heidmork from Nordlingaholt (Norðlingaholt). Walking through the woods, feeling the air and listening to the birds. You can easily top the trip by taking with you a Icelandic donut (kleina), coffee or chocolate milk (kókómjólk) as a snack. If the weather is nice, there are many places in Heidmork where you can bbq. If you don't have a car, I recommend using TAXI for drop off and pick up. The best way get the right location in this big area of Heiðmörk for pick up, use the Icelandic TAXI app, "Hreyfill" and ask for a pick up by your location. This is a perfect for people who are staying in Iceland for short periods of time and want to experience Icelandic nature without leaving the city limits.

Heiðmörk has some interesting geological formations on the east side and great views from the hills on the west side. There are hiking trails all over the park as well as horse riding trails. The roads are unsealed though. You could spend a whole day exploring here. We visited in May and the bathrooms were locked so I'm guessing that the official season doesn't start until June.

I went to Heidmork on a recommendation by someone from Reykjavik. The space has nice walking trails around the water and through some forested areas, very peaceful and not very crowded. Nice way to escape the feel of the city without driving very far.

We were taken to heidmork by our photographer to take our wedding pictures. It was so beautiful the snow near the forest (well Icelandic forest which isn't many trees and none are very large) it was so pretty. There are also some lava formations there which we took pictures on. The snow was quite deep when we visited so we couldn't go far into the nature reserve but what we saw was lovely. I'm sure it would be an excellent hike in the summer. We also saw a pony trek so they are available in that area.

A must for panoramic cameras. At least a 300 degree view of natural beauty. Be careful on the viewing ramps - we had ice.

A good spot near Reykjavik to see some cool volcanic features and colors. There were a lot of horse riders here, so a good chance to see Icelandic horses in action. There were a lot of small flies in areas, especially when no breeze. They didn't seem to bite, just annoying.

Cool natural area with amazing psuedo-craters. Beautiful in winter and summer. If your in Reykjavik, spend a couple of hours checking this place out.

We came here on our last night before dinner. We drove all day seeing landmarks along the south coast and drove back to Reykjavík since we had to leave in the morning. We still had some daylight and wanted to see some more but were unsure where to go that was still close to the city. We did a google search and found this place. Man we were so glad we found this place before we left. Would have came earlier if we knew. When we arrived we were the only people on any of the trails. The scenery was so cool it looked like another planet. Great spot close to the city. Only drove for like 15-20 minutes before we got there.
