Viking World is the home of the Viking Ship Íslendingur (the Icelander)....

Viking World is the home of the Viking Ship Íslendingur (the Icelander). Built in 1996, Icelander is an exact replica of the famous Gokstad ship, a remarkable archaeological find of an almost completely intact Viking ship, excavated in Norway in 1882. Viking World is also a home of the Viking millennium exhibition produced by the Smithsonian Institution called Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga. This exhibition sheds light onto the Norse settlement and explorations of unknown lands. These two fine projects, both celebrate Iceland's central role in the discovery of North America a 1000 years ago by the Norse Vikings. They have now found a permanent home in Viking World, a spectacular modern building situated right by the Faxafloi bay in the town of Reykjanes, and can be easily spotted from the main road between the international airport and Reykjavík.

Viking World features a full scale replica Viking longship that was used to cross the Atlantic. Visitors are able to enter the ship. There is a small museum, gift shop and cafe. Viking World had just finished serving a breakfast buffet when we arrived. Great for an activity close to the airport.

Especially for Americans this is interesting place with pictures of that viking ship sailing to US. My boys are young but very excited. Heading to Airport but have 1-2 extra hours? then try this.

This museum is right on the coast, with great views on a good day. There is breakfast served here between 7 and 10 am - the usual entrance fee is 1500 kronur but we arrived around 8 am so we paid 1800 kronur each which included a buffet breakfast. There's a few really interesting things to see here and the... More

This was a great museum and well worth the price paid. It was great to learn about all the Viking influence on the island which connected the dots for so many references to things we kept seeing. If I had to do it all over again, I would get off the plane, stop here for their breakfast/museum combo and then... More

Go early for breakfast. For only 1800 kr, you get a hot breakfast buffet plus entrance to the museum! What a deal! We came to the museum and they were just closing up breakfast, if only we had known! The museum is interesting, with displays and explanations of early Viking culture and settlers. The Viking ship is beautiful. Kids and... More

If you have any interest at all in the history and culture of Iceland, than this is a must see. Even if your interest is limited, seeing and exploring the ship Islendingur is worth the experince. Time it takes as little as an hour, two tops.

The modern building of museum is in contrast with traditional mud houses. It's located at the ocean near to a bay, which is guarded by two statues. I liked the ship. It's a great experience to see and walk on a piece of famous history. There is plenty of information about Iceland and its history. There are not only panels... More
