An entrance fee is required at the Viking cafe, and you get access to the entire area, including the Viking movie set. We could not get to the movie set as the parking was pretty far away. There are no proper carparks as indicated on the map. You just stop anywhere by the road. The weather was good when we reached, and every photo of the mountains came out so dramatically beautiful. Definitely did not regret coming to this place.

Really enjoyed, beautiful mountain, clear water for amazing photos. Paid 900 ISK/ per person and spent about 1 hour primarily at the main mountain with the shallow walk. (Note that water is not always in front of the mountain but luckily there was some water when we went). We didn’t visit lighthouse or other paths.

Another six-dot spot. Turn from the SS1 towards the sea and travel 2 km to the car park. If you want to continue by car to the beach, the village and the weather station you have to pay a ticket of 900 isk which with the printed code allows you to raise the barrier that closes the road. The Vestrahorn, the lagoon, the beach and the Viking village (fake) await you for more or less long walks (depending on what you want to do), walking on very fine black volcanic sand that will transport you to an unusual landscape.
On the side of the meteorological station, a wildlife reserve with observation of sea birds.

Vestrahorn is a beautiful place indeed, but there are many other equally beautiful places in Iceland where you don't have to pay so much for it. 900ISK/person, it would be a more fair solution if you only had to pay per car, like in other places. The viking village was a disappointment. Much more could be made out of it with a little attention. And it would be better if we could go into the houses.

We went here twice within two days. First day we waited 4 hours in the fog (from 16-20). Second day we waited 3 hours in the fog (from 7.30 to 10.30). This place has lots of photographic opportunities, but unfortunately the weather is unreliable. Even when the surroundings have a clear sky and full sun, Vestrahorn can be covered in fog. You have to be patient and lucky. We we patient, but not lucky.

It was very beautiful, I loved the view of the mountain, the walk on the beach, the black sand dunes. But sheesh do these Icelandics looooooove to charge to park! Unbelievable, 900isk per person to park for a few minutes. I just can't grasp who comes up with these prices. It's called gauging where I am from. If you really want to see it go for it, but keep in mind you will pay for it and there is no way around it. Even walking in won't let you surpass the absurd cost.

Beauty is everywhere you look in Iceland and, even though prices are generally high here, I never felt ripped off until today. The Viking Village is a ruin you’ll see in 10 minutes, and the beach has no more to offer than 20 others. The mountain is beautiful, but not 1000ISK beautiful — not with gorgeous mountains everywhere. They really have no right to charge for this — well, sure, they have the right; it just isn’t ethical.

We enjoyed this place just for the hiking. Yes it costs 1000 kroners per each to get in, but the ticket lady was helpful on where to hike. We end up walking 5+ miles on the black sand beach and we had it mostly to ourselves. Well worth the visit.

A lot of money for a mediocre place. Arrived here at end of windy day. We thought it would be nice to see a Viking village. Appeared to be rotten and dilapidated. Not really what we expected. Beautiful mountains and beach, but you don't have to pay for that further down the road

Honestly, I didn't find there to be anything all that special about the mountains and view. They're pretty, but not particularly memorable. I think they photograph better, especially with the right lighting. If you don't have time to see this, then don't stress about it.

Is Vestrahorn accessible in mid September, i.e. the 13th? Also can you drive to it, and if so is it and F road/need a 4x4 vehicle? Anyone do a tour to this location? Thank you in advanced!!

I concur with what Peter2780 said. We were there in September of 2018, had no problems navigating the area. One thing he didn't mention is that there is an abandoned movie set at the base of the mountain that you can explore. It's a short walk from the cafe. The best views of the mountain are from a point across the water which is accessible via the road/gate that he mentioned.

I am staying in Hofn next week and would like to visit Vestrahorn. However I cannot drive a car, is there any other way of getting to Vestrahorn? (Bus, Bicycle etc?).
Thanks for the help!

Is there a opening/ closing time?
Written 19 June 2018
I think there is likely to be for the cafe but there is access to the site regardless of time as there is also a campsite there.
There is an automatic barrier on the road leading up to the old air base which I believe is where most of the photographs are taken from, but I think there is a machine on the side of the café to buy a ticket which lifts the barrier for access.
The barrier automatically lifts on the way out.
