Akureyris' ski resort is situated just 5 km outside of the town, it is a very unique area. The elevation of the site goes from 500 m to 1000 m above sea level and so there is plenty of opportunity for good skiing during the winter months. Since 2006 Hliðarfjall has had a number of snow making machines installed which extendes and improves snow conditions on the slopes. The longest trail is more than 2.5 km. It is equipped with 7 ski lifts and 23 alpine slopes. All of the main runs are floodlit, allowing evening skiing.

Lifts open at 13:00 on weekdays until 19:00; at weekends and holdays lifts are open from 10:00 to 16:00.

Our ski rental has complete range of equipment for alpine, telemark, snowboard and cross country skiing. We also have snowblades and sledges.

Ski and snowboard lessons for both children and adults, are available at the ski centre daily. Please book in advance.

Cross country tracks for all levels of skiers. 3,5 km. of the cross country trails are flood lighted until 10pm which is groomed daily. Many other trails are available depending on the conditions.

There are two cafeterias at the ski resort. Both serving hot/cold drinks, a selection of hot/cold food, home cooked soups and confectionary.

The view from the upper resturant in Hlíðarfjall is something else. Not many ski areas where you can see the sea from the slopes. The slopes are from mild to interesting. Good instructors and a well run operation. Always a good experience, recommended for families.

I have never skied before, as advised by local tour guide, my friend and I went to Hlidarfjall Akureyri for skiing spontaneously. Björgvin helped us to book a coach, and other staffs are all very friendly and helpful. Our coach was Theodora, she is extremely patient, (when facing 2 clumsy students haha), nice & friendly and she even drove us... More

Really good area with good variety, 5 minutes drive from town make it á must for travellers visiting Akureyri. the lifts are a bit slow but nothing that troubles when in good mood. Good both for snowboards and skiing.

So this is a small ski area and if you are looking for a huge system with days' worth of skiing for experts, you will be sad. However, it was wonderful for me! It had several fun intermediate runs that presented enough challenge to keep me interested for a few days. It's a bit expensive and the chair lift is... More

Short distance from town and good long slopes, compared to Iceland. No Alpine length slopes but wide and well kept all in all.

This is a good area for kids and adults with a good ski school that operates during weekends. It's so close to town that you can take a taxi for a minimal cost and the apre ski is basically every restaurant in town. Really cheap to ski and rent and you can buy a pass that gets you to 3... More

This is the best skiing area in Iceland - not many more to choose from though. Too bad how slow the chair lift is and it does not go very far - it should go further up to the mountain. VERY Expensive though.

Can't fault it for what it is. Teeny tiny. I ski french alps so this is really tiny. Alright for an afternoon or learning to ski instead of going to the snow dome.

As an absolute beginner, I signed up for a private lesson and had a really fun time. The location is easy to get to, the staff really helped with our ski equipment rental, and they even offered to waive off the cost of renting two ski outfits. One thing that was kind of awkward is that their toilets were mixed... More
