A majestic church. A calm atmosphere inside. Also a place for smaller kids to play in. There was a museum on the second floor which had an entry fee of 10€. Didn’t check it out but would still recommend it.

Turku, Finland's oldest city, also has two of the most important monuments of the country: the Castle and the Cathedral, both from the end of the 13th century, when the town was founded by the Swedes.

The Cathedral lies about 3km away from the Castle on the north side of the river Aura. Today there is a small park and square in front of the church, which can be seen from far away thanks to its over 100m high tower. The building consists mainly of red brick and what we see today dates mainly from after the Great Turku Fire of 1827, when most of the town was destroyed.

In the interior the worthwhile to look at altarpiece, frescoes, pulpit all date from the 19th century, just as the tower. More recent are the organs of the cathedral. Outside the cathedral is a pleasant café with outdoor seating.

Very beautiful old church! Atmosphere was peaceful. We took lots of photos after asking if that is okay. There was a place for children to play. Entrance is free. Place to relax for a while.

Unless you are very much into churches, the best way for me to enjoy this building is to sit at the outside restaurant/food stand area close by, and just chill there. You will have the church in the background for the pictures, and at the same time, the feeling that you are in the city center.

Very simple yet beautiful church.I like when they have the candles you can light for prayers or past loved ones. It was probably the nicest thing I liked about Turku.

Outside of Helsinki, on our self drive trip, we found attractions and nice towns but not as much to see as other contires. Turku is an exception. The Turku Cathedral is 900 years old and really worth a visit. Do not rush through but take your time going through the chapels and looking at the floor for the burial stones. This cathedral has been around for a very long time and it has a lot of history. The other thing we really appreciated is that there are many signs in multiple languages explaining what you are seeing. We did not have time to go into the tower but I imagine it would also have been a good vantage point and worth the time to do it. I believe they do have tours but we were there on a Monday when many things are closed in Finland. I might also mention that there were many Finnish school children there and they all seemed engrossed in the explanations being given by their teachers.

I have visited this cathedral years ago as a tourist. As magnificent as the building is at is own, this time I wanted to experience it in it's intended use. The service is on Sundays 10.00 am. Beautiful amosphere, I especially enjoyed to hear the organs being played.

Historical and beautiful church which is definitely worth of visiting. Entrance is free but museum is 2 Euros. Museum is waste of time but otherwise church is good place to visit.
