The House of Estates from 1890 has become part of our life for the past two years as cabinet ministers have been making statements concerning the pandemy from its stairs on the evening news. Normally used for state conferences and receptions it is practically situated within walking distance from the Senate building, the Presidents Palace and the Helsinki University. Helping to keep the politicians in touch with reality the children from communal day care play in the park behind it.

Built for the three estates, bourgeoisie, pesants and clergy the palace was designed by architect Gustaf Nyström in 1890. After the democratic parliamentary reform in 1906 the building soon became too small for all the 200 representatives who had to function in several different locations until the new Parliament house was opened in 1931. There is no entrance for the public as the palace facing the Bank of Finland and near the Senate is nowadays used for state conferences and receptions. You might see our political elite just walking on the street from one building to another.

Säätytalo (in Finnish) is a beautiful historical building in Helsinki, designed by CG Nyström and completed in 1891. It is located opposite of the Bank of Finland, immediately northeast of Helsinki Cathedral.

Originally it housed the three commoner estates of Grand Duchy of Finland. The estates were superseded at the 1906 parliamentary reform by the foundation of the unicameral parliament of Finland. The parliament settled elsewhere, leaving Säätytalo for secondary usage.

Nowadays, Säätytalo is best known as a venue, which organizes Finnish government negotiations following the parliamentary elections.

Säätytalo is closed for public visits.

It is an outstandingly beautiful building with a sumptuous facade with a plethora of exquisite architectural details including Greek columns and a tympanum with a row of symbolic figures.

Dating from 1891 it was the location for the three commoner estates, namely the Clergy, Bourgeoisie and Peasants. The highest estate of the Nobility had their home in a nearby building.

The decorative features are exquisite. A gorgeous entrance hall has a grand staircase ascending to the higher floors.

Visited during the VOYAGES JULES VERNE walking tour of Helsinki. I found it difficult to get a decent photo because of the building's size versus my camera lens. Now I realize it's the Prime Minister's Office.

This architecturally beautiful building, was built in the late 1800s. At the time home to the three commoner estates of the realm at the time. Our guide informed us, when Russia was in power of Finland they encouraged the meetings of the estates, however the group felt they were being watched. As a result meetings were conducted else where.
