Last morning in Helsinki spent 2 hours in this great exhibition. I was unaware of Alvor but now have learnt what a great mind he had - and such a full and rewarding life. His designs that are up to 80 years old are fresh...More

Impressive building outside, home to most well-known Finnish classics, along with some impressionists and modern painters. The Aalto collection was interesting.

If, like me, you know little of Finnish painting, this is the place to come. The main (I assume permanent) exhibition can be got around in about an hour. Much of the art is influenced by trends elsewhere in Europe but it is interesting to...More

A small museum (only two floors) but packs a nice punch for what it is. Was pleasantly surprised to see a van gohh hanging up in one of the corners. My knowledge of finnish art and architecture was zero when i walked in and feel...More

I was rather disappointed in the exhibtions - not my taste. The special exhibition was more interesting than the Finnish classical art. I found the Sinebrychoff Art Museum much more satisfying.

We really enjoyed the museum. Especially the temporary Alvar Aalto exhibition was very interesting. Unfortunately one floor was closed due to renovation. I also liked the idea that the entrance ticket is a sticker which you have to put on your clothes.

The collection was largely of Finnish artists (makes sense), but if you are looking for a museum with European masters, this isn't it. It did have two Calder mobiles and a number of his printed works as well as a Edward Munch that was massive...More

The Helsinki Athenaeum was very much a disappointment. The collection was small although there were some memorable paintings. If you have been to the major museums, you can easily miss this one.

I'm just now realising that there was an Alvar Alto exhibition on when my husband and I visited last week (how did we miss that?!). We would have loved to have seen that. (And there was a Modigliani exhibition in February - Ateneum has some...More
