    Nice art museum
This is one of the main art museums, opposite the station. Entrance fee of 20 euros is included in the Helsinki card. A large part of the exhibition is now dedicated to Albert Edelfelt, a Finnish artist who traveled a lot through Europe. From his paintings it is clear that he must have been influenced by the French artists at the end of the 19th century. The museum consists of two floors connected by staircases.

Glorious repository of more traditional art
A must- see museum of “classical “ art. Primarily Finnish artists but a good representation of international greats. Presently there is a special exhibition of Albert Edelfelt, renowned Finnish painter of late -19 to early 20 th century. This exhibit seems to celebrate the reopening & renovation of the museum in April. I was so disappointed last summer when it was closed for renovations.

    Always a pleasure
New exhibitions are up and they are as lovely as expected. The interactive art wall is out of this world--how they're marrying tech with art is amazing. I'm a little sad some of Tove's art has been removed, but everything else is well worth seeing.

    Great Art Pieces
Wode range of fine and truly significant Finnish art can be found here. It is located in a good location and the building itself is beautiful both outside and inside. It's definitely worth a visit, even if you're not the biggest fan of art.

    Surprised
This little gem was a pleasant surprise. It doesn’t have the art quantity of other museums we’ve visited, but makes up by representing high quality local and historical Finnish artists. The most interesting aspect are the greenish marble? floors with ammonite fossils imbedded within. I found that to be most interesting. The art is well curated and easy to visit in 1-2 hours.

    A fantastic art museum
A fantastic art museum downtown Helsinki. Besides traditional Finnish art they provide interesting changing exhibitions. Friendly knowledgeable staff, affordable tickets and lovely atmosphere! Note that by purchasing a generic museum card you can enter for free to any museum in Finland! Depending on the frequency of museum visits, this may pay back on shorter trips as well

    Impressive experience
My first time in this building. The building itself was stylish and the art exhibition of Eero Järnefelt was amazing with lots of paintings and what a quality! I'm not an art lover, but these paintings made a big impression on me.

Ive been to galleries in almost every european country and a number in north america. At €22 entry, this is the worst value gallery I've ever been to. There's some exhibits on the ground floor, and then you've the 1st floor, that's it. It's not a big building. The art is boring and a real mismash of styles thrown together. I was in and out I less than 30 minutes. There's really nothing to see here for this scandalous price. The only plus is its almost exclusively Finnish artists, which is good to see, as some galleries are too focused on importing art for their displays rather than exhibit local art history

The Ateneum art music just reopened this spring after a massive renovation. The building looks great. It's also not hard to find, being more or less across the street from Helsinki's train station (which is also worth a look, if nothing else but for the statues out front). The galleries look wonderful and they display the art well.

Not surprisingly, the museum focuses on the works of Finnish artists. You may not be familiar with many of the artists but that just gives you the opportunity to see new things.

In terms of more familiar artists, there are a handful of works by more widely known names such as Cezanne, Ilya Repin, and Max Ernst. The museum owns a Van Gogh, but it was not on display and possibly on loan for an exhibition elsewhere during our visit.

With the museum’s reopening, they had a large exhibition on the works of Albert Edelfelt. Most of the work in the museum was from the late 1800s up to around 1950, although there were also some more contemporary works. This makes sense in that Helsinki is a newer city by European standards and came into its own during this same period.

You can buy timed tickets ahead of time on-line. We did so, given the popularity of the museum following its reopening, but it may not be strictly necessary at less popular times.

They strongly urge you to check bags and coats and the guards are fairly aggressive about policing them. We didn't object to that, both to protect the art and visitors. They have a high-tech locker system that makes it easy to check them, so it shouldn't be a problem.

We've given this attraction a 5 because of what it is, a museum of Finnish art, where you are going to see works that you likely won't see elsewhere. We saw this as little different from the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Tate British in London, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, etc. You will certainly see something new, but few artists from other countries. It should definitely be high on your list if you are in Helsinki.

Rather disappointing compared to the art museums in other parts of Europe. €20 for three small floors of paintings and sculptures. Wasted money.
