It is a close neighbor across a short strait of water, and the exotic red-brick Orthodox cathedral Uspenski, designed by Aleksei Gornostayev of St Petersburg in the late 1800s, cements the Russian connection. The cathedral sits atop a rocky outcrop on the Katajanokka peninsula opposite...More

I had some free time while in Helsinki, and given this grand cathedral was very visible from the harbour front, I thought I'd pop up and have a look. It's a very ornate, highly decorated Orthodox cathedral inside, very beautiful, so definitely worth going in...More

This is easy spotted if you are walking towards the market square or you are at Helsinki cathedral. It's colourful.

Nice and quiet place near the port. It has a different kind of atmosphere compere to other churches in Helsinki. There are no chairs at all but full of beautiful icons and paintings. It gives you an experience what it would like to be in...More

The walk up the hill to visit this cathedral is well worth it. Surprisingly small and most ornate, the interior is very impressive. We visited early on Sunday morning and were able to watch a service taking place from the visitor section.

This won't disappoint you. It is very impressive from the outside, and when you walk in, you know, that you are in Russian orthodox church... it is opulent and gold... it was nice to see, and I recommend it.

Looks rather forboding from the outside but has a very spectacular (and over-the-top?) interior - well worth a visit.

Russian Orthodox history and influence in the area. Near the harbour. Beautiful church, take the time to understand the history as it will make your visit more enjoyable

The Russian Orthodox Church was built in 1868. The exterior with the top onion dome represents Jesus and the lower domes represent the 12 apostles. The interior was really small inside.

It's closed on Monday. They are only opened for a couple of hours on other days if the week too. Though it is worth going in, just looking at the church and walking around it to see the 360 view of Helsinki bay is nice, too.
