When I can I usually try to visit national museums to get a better idea of a country or society, and this one certainly gave a good idea of 1,000 years of Finnish history, sandwiched between the two (at the time) superpowers of Sweden and Imperial Russia. I commented that it would have been helpful, for most tourists, to have... More

A very interesting museum with many exhibits and detailed information panels. I took the free guided tour which gave a pretty good outline of what there was to see, then came back looking for what I wanted to see in more detail. Overall I think it gave me a better understanding of the country's history and identity. I also enjoyed... More

I look forward to visiting this museum every year or so, and seeing what new they have to offer. For a reasonable price they provide a great activity for a day in Helsinki. For first time visitors to Finland, it can help provide context to Finland's unique cultural position between East and West. The section on Saami and peasant life... More

The National Museum of Finland was a bit dull, even for a real museum buff like me. I found it emphasized the art and design of historic periods more than the actual history of Finland. A lot of rooms were simply assorted paintings and furniture that were nothing special. The Throne Room was outstanding, however, along with the display on... More

We had a guided tour of this interesting museum which helped us gather a bit of knowledge regarding the cultural history of this country . It gives you an insight into the development from the early forest dwellers to modern Finland . Well worth a visit but go with a guide .

A good collection, showing a self-image of the country from the time the collection was made. Although it covers the Sami, while not the Swedish-speaking parts of the country, and it does not make it clear that many of the artefacts came from outside the country, ie were imported, this is a manageable and informative display. You can follow the... More

I wish this collection had been organized better, perhaps with chronology rather than by type (furniture, clothing, sacral art). I didn't find it particularly easy to understand the lineage and evolution of FInnish history through the exhibits although there were a lot of very pretty and interesting items to look at.
