Helsinki Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from the city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Helsinki Zoo is home to 150 animal and 1000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Meet the large Amur tigers, tiny pygmy marmosets, agile snow leopards, impressive wisents and dazzling, free roaming peafowls. Not to mention the indigenous Finnish species: elk, bear, wolverine, forest reindeer and more.

The zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Helsinki Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Helsinki zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to re-introduce animals to their natural habitats. Helsinki Zoo is renowned for its work in helping endangered big cats. Helsinki Zoo is the most significant annual donor for the conservation of the endangered Amur leopard and tiger.

Enjoyed an amazing day excursion at the zoo with my girlfriend. The snowleopards were my favourite and I also loved the eagles. A place for any age really.

Just visited this zoo (4th time, after visits in 1970, 1978, 2013). This is the only major zoo in Finland, and therefore very popular with the domestic crowd. Ranks on top of Helsinki sights for young visitors, along with the Linnanmäki amusement park. Even yesterday, in cloudy, gray and drizzly weather one of the parking lots was pretty full, and... This was a great zoo to visit. We took the ferry from the market - only 20 minutes each way. We spent a few hours walking around - they have reindeer and other animals we don't see at the zoo where we live. Definitely worth the visit.

Helsinki zoo is an average place. It is not so big compared to other countries zoos but still worth visiting it. Visiting via ferry is recommended, also there is bus service from Helsinki centre.

It's open throughout the year, so be aware that it is an island and on an cold winter day it's a rather freezing place to be. It's a nice place to walk around and watch the animals, but we were a bit unlucky and there were not too many animals around. Amazonia was nice with the jungle and butterflies.

This zoo is not so big and there are not too many exotic animals. The island is quite compact, so not too hard to tour in just a few hours. I suggest taking the water bus/ferry from Helsinki market square, as the bus takes quite long.

We arrived around 4pm and stayed until closing at 8pm. We didn’t quite get to see all the animals. A pretty basic city zoo. You can walk to the island or take a water taxi from downtown Helsinki. Not all the animals are out and easy to see. We got lucky and saw more than usual. It was a cooler... More

Helsinki zoo is clean and has god service. The Zoo is an island which made my visit even better. You can take the bridge or the ferry when your visiting or leaving the zoo. It has a lot of green areas and did not at all seem stuffed with people. It was a very nice.

Been to lots of zoos over the years as a child and with my own children. This is by far the best zoo I have been too. You have to get a boat over to the zoo as it is on an island and this us all included in the price. Very cheap too. Lovely zoo lots of animals well... More
