The Czarina's Stone is standing in the Market Square in the front of the City Hall. The obelisk with a golden statue of a double-headed Russian eagle on the top was made to commemorate the Empress Alexandra’s first visit to Helsinki in 1833.

Close to the port and waterfront area, you can find this monument dedicated to Tsar Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra for when they first came to Helsinki in the late nineteenth century. There’s a large golden two-headed bird atop the statue and the monument itself is...More

This is an Obelisk with a double headed Russian eagle on top. Located bang in the market place is an attraction which is there for anyone to see. Nothing very great about the design but it marks the place where Czar Nicholas and his wife...More

We nearly did. We were more interested in visiting the nearby markets with the less than 6 hours of sunlight of the Helsinki winter, and we really did not pay a lot of attention to this statue on the waterfront. Can't say it was that...More

This is a fairly prominent monument in an obelisk form located not too far from the City Hall. The monument commemorates the visit from the Russian Royal family in 1833. It's a nice looking monument and worth a look if you're already in the area.

This impressive monument is placed on the spot where Czar Nicholas and Czarina Alexandra first set foot in Helsinki in 1833. Interestingly it was the first public sculpture in the city. It soars skywards and has at its apex a double headed eagle atop a...More

Strolling around at the Market Place in Helsinki I jumped into this peculiar statue. Helsinki’s first public sculpture, the Stone of the Empress, was erected as a momento to the visit to the capital by the Emperor Nicholas I and his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna. It...More

Standing next to the sea and in the centre of the open market, this monument catches the eye. In the backdrop, the Upenskin Cathedral adds to the grandeur of this pillar.

I must say that when we were in Market Square I wasn't particularly taken by the monument. However when it came to looking at the photos that I had taken I was amused to see that I caught a bird in flight, possibly a pigeon,...More
