We spent a couple of hours of free time in Halmstad during a Coach Tour. This is a very nice city to visit and there is plenty to see. Starting with the Town Square, the Town Hall is nearby, and it is easy to walk around the various streets leading away from the Square. The architecture is very interesting and varied, with neighbourhoods nearby. Halmstad Castle is an easy walk, as is the riverside and the Picasso statue across the river.

You can find a lot of places to get something to eat, and there is a lot of other activites. But ... this is all in the summer. In the cold and dark winter it is a different thing.

This town is situated between Malmö and Gothenburg, which makes it a perfect stop if you go by car or train. There is also a small airport with connections to the capital. In the outskirts of the town, you will find the sand beaches: the eastern beach, which is quite ok, and the western beach, where you can begin your walk along the water as far as the famous beaches of Görvik, Grötvik and Tylösand. The town is perfect for walking around. You will find small cafés, restaurants and quite a lot of small shops. I recommend in particular Gudagott (Hantverksgatan), where you can buy fine meat, which is locally produced, the chocolate store Triple chocolate (Brogatan) and one of Sweden's best bakeries, Feldts (Kasten Rönnowsgatan). All these three shops are to be found on the western side of the Nissan river. Do not forget to visit the big square (Stora torg) with the statue Europe and the Bull and the church, the small square (Lilla torg) where you also find the old porch, Norre port, and the new City library by the river!

Halmstad is a seaside paradise, home to Hotell Tylösand (Per Gessle, Roxette) and endless summer concerts, naturist beaches, and a city center that takes care in the details--adorning itself with hearts & crowns, right down to the manhole covers and rubbish bins. It's not as packed with tourists and moves at a slower pace than the bigger cities. A really lovely place to relax and take in the authentic Swedish lifestyle.

The West coast of Sweden between Malmo and Gothenburg has many idyllic towns to visit and enjoy. Halmstad is one such place and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The shops and various and often selling quite different items from the UK.

Halmstad has a lot of spunk. In town you can see several public artworks, and inside the library there is an art gallery. There are also some lovely coffee shops and restaurants.

thats if you are staying on the west coast of course. Halmstad is a real party seaside town, and there is much going on all day. The numerous sandy beaches are the best, and a lot of them you can drive onto with a car making it so much more fun and practical.

Driving from Germany to Göteborg, when comes to the city of Halmstad. What a breath of fresh air! Unlike Germany, there was no war damage. Old buildings mixed with new. A large, generous commercial shopping area, which has evolved to a beautiful, comfortable place to walk. You can see the beautiful new library, just next to the river is the government-sponsored handicraft center, beautiful square, and lots of interesting boutiques. Just walking through the city, you get the feeling that the government is doing something right. Everything feels balanced, clean, safe, great air, beautiful river, parking spaces, and it seems like everybody is quite content. A wonderful introduction to the Swedish welfare state.
