First thing first ...the church I'm going to write about is situate in the village of Cristian near Sibiu ... (there is another 1 in Brasov County - almost 200 km away).
Second - both village have a fortified church ...
This being said back to Cristian - near Sibiu - where you shall find the church - pity if you look it up on the web the info is misleading - no surprise- Saturday and Sunday it is opened only until noon - no afternoon opening hours. So we got there and seen the outside .. Interesting but the experience was not as we expected - hence the average score. We took a fee pics and went back to Sibiu - maybe next time we'll have more luck ... unfortunately in Romania is still a matter of luck if you check out "tourist attractions" of the beaten track - none the less I will still insist.

From the Saxon churches in Transylvania the one in Cristian is a fine example and a very interesting place to see.
This one is near Brasov - not to be confused with the one near Sibiu - to villages in Romania , with fortified Saxon churches but 150 km away from each other... and both are listed on TA and is hard to distinguish between ... and the reviews and pictures posted are mixed between the 2 location... still this is the 1 near Brasov.
When you arrive you can park on the street near the church - free of charge , at the entrance you call the phone number displayed there and in a few min the lady who is the custodian and guide for the church will open the door for you an you can visit this nice place.
You will learn about the history of the church - you will learn about why the benches for women have no backrests... etc, - I will not go into too many details - check it out for yourself.
The most interesting piece for me was the "Luster of Heroes" - forged from iron after WWI it has the name of all those fallen from the village of Cristian - their names are placed on small plaques that are the replicas of the "dog tags" used by the soldiers in WWI ... a nice and unique item only to be seen here.
But enough of the spoiler - the tours is great , the church has a great history to it and is the home to some very unique items and the custodian is such a great person , it will make the tour so great for you.
When in the area don't miss this , is a great place to visit ... go check it out for yourself.

Hello, there are 3 things to be mentioned:

1. there are 2 villages called Cristian in Transylvania, Romania. One of them is in Brasov County, only a few km westwards from the city of Brasov, and the other one is in Sibiu County, only a few km west of the city of Sibiu. There are 159 km between these two villages called Cristian!!!!

2. each of these two villages has a fortified church and each of these fortified churches has page on TA - see:
2.1. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1898553-d4238851-Reviews-Cristian_Fortified_Church-Cristian_Brasov_County_Central_Romania_Transylvania.html
for the fortified church in Cristian, Brasov county
and see
2.2 https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g10441052-d10317503-Reviews-Biserica_fortificata_din_Cristian-Cristian_Sibiu_County_Central_Romania_Transy.html
for the fortified church in Cristian, Sibiu County

3. the TROUBLE is that on this page I'm writing right now you have 2 reviews (one in English, one in German) and a photo. Both these 2 reviews refer to the church in Cristian, Brasov County (which already has a distinct page as mentioned above at 2.1.) BUT the photo is of the church in Cristian, Sibiu County (which has a distinct page, as mentioned above at 2.2.).

In order to check what I'm saying, read first the reviews - it's clear they refer to the church in Cristian, Brasov County. Then, pleas check the photos of the 2 churches: you only have a tower like the one in the photo on this page in Cristian, Sibiu County. As a matter of fact, there's nowhere else in Transylvania a tower like the one of the fortified church of Cristian, Sibiu County.

Please do the necessary:
I. move the two reviews on this page to the page of the fortified church in Cristian, Brasov County.
II. move the photo on this page to the photo gallery of the fortified church in Cristian, Sibiu County.
III. delete this page.

Thank you!

Living up to its name it kept us out until we found an unlocked door. There are no signs to indicate entry and there is no charge and you can take photos. Custodian opened up the church for us and left us free to roam. The grounds and gardens are lush and green albeit a bit unkemp but very peaceful. Unfortunately for us it was raining but on a sunny day would be marvellous. There is a similar church 5kms away at Ghimbav. Older church with less restoration done and worth a visit if you have a car. Very easy to park for free at both churches.

This fortified church in the village of Cristian, close to Bran in Transylvania, is well worth a look. It consists of a large church, set in a beautiful garden full of flowers, and surrounded by a thick greystone wall. The church was fortified in the days when villages were subject to attack and the idea would be for the entire village population to shelter within the walls until the attackers were repelled. It is an alternative to the rather grander and more expensive 'citadels' such as the one at nearby Rasnov. I can't comment on the inside as a service was going when I visited so I did not go in, but the outside alone is worth a look. The local people are very friendly too and happy to show their church.

Easy/ short drive from Sibiu in a nice town that has lots of charm itself. The Church is a great example of Saxon Fortified Churches but quieter than others. Great displays and bell tower ... I mean really great bell tower! You must go, I don't want to spoil it for you!

...but closed on Saturday when we have been there :(
The church looks very well renovated and is the only remarkable attraction in Cristian.

Old German Church in the middle of the village, recently renovated just a few years ago.
Very close to Brasov, only 7 Km, on the road to Rasnov and Bran, worth a short stop to visit.

The walls are also renovated and still easy to recognize the Middle Ages Architectural style.
There is also a small one room museum which deals with the history of the Saxons in Christian.
