Neighbourhood: Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting: take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest) alleys, which will make you feel like you’ve travelled back in time. This neighborhood offers a great combination of historical buildings and traditional Swedish restaurants.

This isn’t a must see in Stockholm, but if you’re visiting Gamla Stan and the government buildings etc. you may as well take a short detour over a canal and major through route to this small island which is basically summed up as elegant houses, a pretty church and some great views, not least of the Stadshuis/Town Hall across the water.

It was such a delight to stumble upon this gem of an island a few steps away from the crowds of Gamla Stan. Its history is fascinating, and the views superb. I loved that there were no cafes or retail outlets; the main crowd I saw was a group of locals having sandwiches together after a lunchtime swim.

The spire of the former Riddarholmen Church led me to head over from the Klara Malarstrand to check things out. It was a worthwhile trip. The area is associated with the very founding of Stockholm c 1250 AD. The church used to be the burial site for Swedish royalty from 1634 to 1950. Many appeal courts are located here as well as some colourful palaces. Other parts of town get most of the tourists so it is an off the beaten path gem.

It’s easy to miss visiting Riddarholmen while in Stockholm but it is well worth the visit. Connected by bridges to Gamla Stan and central Stockholm, it is a small and quiet island. Not packed with tourists like Gamla Stan, it is mostly government buildings today. The Riddarholmen Church is the centerpoint of the island with its beautiful exterior (but rather plain interior). It is the burial ground of several Swedish monarchs. The church sits on a nice large square surrounded by many colorful old residential palaces. On the water’s edge is a lovely open area with views of lake Mälaren and city hall. It’s a serene place to take a stroll and take in the beautiful architecture. It’s a small island so a visit will take only a half hour or so.

You can enjoy this small island close to to the old city (Gamla Stan) in all seasons.
The amazing view of the frozen sea is at the same level as the glittering and warm view you can enjoy in June/July.
I definitively recommend the short walk to go to Riddarholmen in all season.
Little hints walk down (or up) the Birger Jarls Torg stairs to discover the Normalhöjdpunkten, is just a commemorative plaque on the wall but was the Swedish reference point for "sea level" .

People know about this island, but it is overshadowed by adjacent Gamla Stan. Stockholm plans on making it more of a tourist magnet. For now, you have to rely on some good tourist guides and investigative work. Riddarholmskyrkan is a pretty well-known attraction, and the palaces are easy to find, but you have to dig to find info on the palaces and their history. They are beautiful on the outside, but they house judiciary functions so don't think you can go in. Then there's the Birger Jarls Torn. You can't ignore it, but details of its hitory and current use are scattered. The highlight of the island is the church, but do your homework and enjoy a nice, scenic, relatively quiet and historic city island.

One will get beautiful views while in Riddarholmen which is a small islet just a few minutes away from the Royal Palace. One should visit the Riddarholm church as well when in Riddarholmen.

The island is a nice place to walk around and get decent views of Stockholm City Hall. Its a 10 minute walk from Old Town and worth visiting when in the area.

Riddarholmen is a small island in central Stockholm. It is part of Gamla Stan, the Old Town. However many tourists don't find here and so it is much quieter.
There are a number of private palaces dating back to the 17th century. The main landmark is the church Riddarholmskyrkan, used as Sweden's royal burial church from the 17th century to 1950. Many earlier Swedish monarchs lie buried there. A statue of Birger Jarl stands next to the church.
From the western shore is a panoramic view of the Riddarfjärden Bay with Stockholm City Hall in the background.
If you want to stay here overnight, it is possible in the Mälardrottningen Yacht Hotel. It is permanently docked here.
