Långholmen is a small island near the busy center of Stockholm which used to host the city's prision from 1880 to 1975. The main attraction of the Island is the building containing the prision barracks, which has been turned very cleverly into an eco friendly hotel/hostel/conference center. We visited one of the single rooms and it is great, with a... More

.....there are few better spots in the busy city of Stockholm which are more tranquil and pleasing to the senses than the Long Island!

Langholmen is a very lush island just next to Södermalm. If you are looking for a spot to swim in lake Mälaren, Langholsem is the place to be!

We passed over the bridge then through the tightly packed, uninspiring dirt parking lot for camper vans. We continued on past part of the former walled area then finally reaching some of the sun bathing area and hiking/biking trails. The island was rather quiet during our visit and after walking about half-way around the island and enjoying some great views,... More

I took the metro to Hornstull and walked to Langholmen. Lovely residential area and the island park is accessed at either side by bridges. Used to be a prison and now converted ito a hotel and park grounds. Nice little swimming beach that was busy on this sunny day. Trails criss cross and it is a pretty area.

Under "Västerbron" is this historical Island situated and I have passed it numerous times and never stopped Before unfortunately. This is a hidden oasis right in the middle of Stockholm and when you walk around it it is like you are out in the archipelago of Stockholm and it is absolutely wonderful. It was once where the old prison was... More

If you want a view of Stockholm from the water, don't miss "Langholmen Kajak". Only 200 SEK for 2 hours (longer if you want to), really nice staff and a superb environment for paddling. As a very experienced paddler I was disappointed with the big, plastic sea kayaks and their heavy paddles, however, that's exactly what a less experienced paddler... More

A lot to be missed gem! This is a small island, that used to have a prison. Now the prison is a hotel and hostel and you can actually sleep in the cells. There is a cafe and a nice restaurant, a small beautiful beach and lots of small paths to walk - around the island or across in many... More

Långholmen is definitely one of my favourite islands in Stockholm. The youth hostel / Hotel that was an old prison is perfect if you are looking for an original and quiet place to stay during your visit to Stockholm. The island has its own, very popular sand beach which is usually crowded with local hipsters and their families with small... More

Staying in Hornstull & Langholmen

Neighbourhood Profile
Hornstull & Langholmen
If you love having a drink by the sea right on the beach (and who doesn’t?) Hornstull & Långholmen should be on top of your list. The area was recently redeveloped and now not only offers artsy bars and edgy restaurants but also a post-modern shopping mall complex for urban retail therapy. Hornstull belongs to the more established and sophisticated neighborhoods in Stockholm and is the typical place where you’ll find Swedish dads meeting for a latte during their paternal leave, or where local office workers meet up at the art cinema for a drink or a movie after work. The beaches in Hornstull and Långholmen are popular destinations for barbeques and sunbathing during the summer. Bring sunscreen.
