Explains how the castle was used for many different purposes throughout it's lifetime. Displays including fashion, art works , china, different styles of paintings and artefacts from the castles inhabitants. A lovely art deco staircase too.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 January 2024
- Jerome LCardiff, United Kingdom84 contributionsA must but give yourself at least 3 hours 😀A lot to see and explore. One can easily get lost due to lack signage inside the museum. Quite varied as ranging from aquarium and vivarium, historical items in the old castle and some modern art exhibition. Could easily spend about 3 hours to do it justice.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2024

- Mason BBCastleford, United Kingdom85 contributionsA nice well-informed stop. This was actually full of things to do. I’d say we managed to get around the whole place in 2 hours and that didn’t involve stopping and reading everything. There was a lot of things on offer - the castle itself, the temporary exhibits, the aquarium, it was just a lot of fun overall. There are a lot of stairs in the actual castle, so that is a struggle after a while, and I did trip a couple times, but that may just be me. I do recommend though, it’s a fun look into Malmö and the country’s history with Denmark. The exhibit on sex and gender was also exquisite and actually provided a lot of information I feel a lot of people could benefit from reading.Thank you for a wonderful review.Written 15 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024

Understandably, most of the signs are in Swedish and not in English but there are some in english, including on QR codes and there’s a really interesting video about the history of the city and castle. Aquarium was worth a visit.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 26 August 2024

Malmö Castle is incredibly beautifully surrounded by the moat, and with the castle park right next door. They have a wide range of exhibitions, temporary and permanent. Our stay was perfectly fine, but left disappointed in several things. The experience could have been improved by a better reception at the checkout, with a much greater interest from the staff in informing about the options, the orientation of the castle and personal tips. In our case, we had to spend an unnecessary amount of time feeling lost, disoriented, and missed exhibitions we would have been more interested in seeing if we had known where they were and what they were about before we started. When I asked about the policy regarding carry-on bags, we were told that the changing room with the lockers were probably full, but then no information about where we could find the changing room. We had to ask for that later when we ourselves had been looking for a while. We were not given a map in hand but were directed to take a photo of a laminated A4 paper at the checkout. This after we found the cloakroom, which despite having several free cupboards and chose to lock my mobile. Again, no effort then either in informing us how best to navigate through the castle, and where the various exhibits were to be found. We had coffee at Restaurant Wega, which served a cappuccino that tasted of old musty metal. We thought the best thing about the visit was the little extra exhibition about the white buses outside the castle and the diorama. We paid a duo ticket to be able to also go to the technical museum, but so much time was spent at Malmö Castle that we didn't have time or energy for Technical... and then we hadn't even seen everything in the castle. Would like much clearer maps and directions and more helpful staff who actually want to share information to make everyone's visit as pleasant as possible. With so much choice, you wish you could choose what you want to see. This was very difficult on our visit, where we walked from one room to another not knowing how much was left to see and what was waiting around the next corner.

This museum just seems to be less and less each time I go there. I want more of Malmö, more of Skåne, more of Danmark. There is so much else it focuses on and the new "refurbishment" somehow makes it feel smaller.
Ineffective use of space is something I also feel everytime I visit and poor cohesion of the exhibits.
Sure, it is cheap, they have done refurbishment since last time and things are not as dusty. But I still feel it is lacking a lot of what it could be. The 4 euro tickets are good, the aquarium is very nice to give it some good points. But the souvenir shop is boring still. To much of it is art and the nice old furniture section feels "lessened" in the new design of it.
There need to be more effort to be a Scanian focused museum. Not all these other things they put in there in the midst, Making it a messy experience. To much modern art, not enough history and focus on things. The whole museum should do some self reflection along with perhaps taking a few courses of social interaction. They barely ever even notice you or just look like a sourer puss when you wander the halls. They might also wish to tell their summer "workers", teenagers that loiter in sofas with a "Praktikant" sign on them to do something. It looks like a school on break with them just laying around with their phones in their hand. Tourists and visitors pay for this, the sofa is there for the visitor. Not the summer working teenagers.
Aslong as these things are not handled, this place will just be less and less appealing.

My cousins came for a visit and we chose to spend our time in Malmö at the museum. I had told them about the art and the very old organ. Unfortunately, both were blocked off because of the renovation. We visited a temporary art exhibition which was ok but not great and then went to visit the castle. Only two rooms were available to see and a large group was having some kind of gathering related to the Danish golden horns so we didn't even get to see them. Very disappointing. . . . hope the reonovation is done SOON!

This museum just outside the center of Malmö is actually a combination of several museums about nature and history, among other things.
We did not visit all parts ourselves and limited our visit to, among others, the old castle, the gun tower and the prison museum. The part about the role that Malmö castle played as a shelter for victims of concentration camps after WWII was also interesting.
For the price, you don't have to skip this museum. We paid approximately €8.00 pp for a ticket (full rate).
Not everywhere in the museum there is an English explanation of the objects. As far as we are concerned, that is an area for improvement.
Everything else is fine.

Beautiful castle, embedded in a park. Various museums in the castle (natural history, aquarium, history, art). Ticket is also valid for the Technical Museum next door, very reasonable price, time required: 2 to 3 hours

The student ticket was only 20kr and it gets you into everything. There is a lot of things to do. There was a crowd of people waiting to buy tickets as soon as the castle opened but if you wait about 20mins you can go straight to the desk.
There are free lockers for bags but they didn't all work so I I stead just had to carry my backpack in my hands

I was in awe before even entering the castle. We walked across a bridge over the moat and
Entered the grand castle. The tickets were ridiculously cheap and the museums were mind-blowing. My favorite was the biology museum which holds hundreds of species of interesting and exotic animals from poisonous dart frogs and horned chameleons to piranhas and monitor lizards. There is also a museum on the upper floors which depicts the history of the castle which served as a home and fortress for many kings as well as a prison in the 19th century and even a safe house for refugees during WWll. This museum in my opinion is the highlight of Malmo.

The Malmöhus castle is not what we expected given it’s the oldest preserved Renaissance castle in the Nordic countries. We started in the gardens which, even in mid September, were full of flowers. Stopped by the lighthouse and LB got to swing under an apple tree loaded with apples. On to the museum which houses a small aquarium and herpetarium, (I had to look that up.) or reptile house.
It also has an interactive section with games for mind and body. LB LOVED it. One of the exhibits is a game projected onto a rock climbing wall. Monsters appear and the gamer has to run around and up and down the wall to smash them. We finally had to drag LB away after an hour.
Plus there are sections on the history of the castle an exhibit on film. Definitely a good place for even very young children.

Malmo Castle is a great building, walking distance away from the Central Station. With an amazing garden area between the two, walking from the station to the castle takes about 20 minutes if you take your time sightseeing.
My most favourite area was the prison exhibition! Loved the squeaky doors, the photo gallery with the mugshots and the additional information available for the way the prison worked. The sounds made it scarier thasn some haunted house experiences I have previously visited! Also, the haunting story with the lovely little kitty, and the tiny paw prints are just adorable!
Additionally, the various stairwells, and the cannon tower were a pleasant walk (on-and-off the stairs). Note for the people with accessibility concerns - seems to not be accommodating. Overall, it's a great, authentic side of Malmo where I loved spending some time in history. Would have preferred if the small windows next tot he cannons were cleaned and I could see through them, though.
Honestly, I went there for the castle and the historical part, but I also got the museum entrance tickets to see what it's about. To be fair, I do not get modern art, so I will not comment on that section of the exhibition halls. I will, however, tell you that the Rococo and classical paintings were mesmerising. I have been to the Louvre and Versailles, and some of the paintings here definitely deserve at least as much fame as those there!
The aquarium was very similar to the one I visited in Vienna, so if you like that kind of thing, walk down the stairs and enjoy the animals. Some of the 'preserved' animals, however, were not my kind of thing. Not a fan of taxidermy at all.
I also almost missed the castle side, because it is after the children's area, and I really did not intend to go there as a whole.

Do they still have the giant spider crab exhibition? It's been over 20 years since I've visited but it's something I'll never forget. The museum is beautiful.
