Took a one hour cruise that gave us views of geothermal phenomena that we never would have seen from land. The shorelines are beautiful and steam rises here and there from the volcanic activity. Under the surface lies the terraces formed by volcanic explosions that in the 19th century were on the shore fully exposed. After more eruptions, they were submerged but they were located a few years ago, according to researchers. Who knows, maybe they will rise again in the tuture. Even without seeing them, the lake and the land are awesome and beautiful.

The boat ride & commentary was just awesome. To think that we were above one of the 7 natural wonders of the world (pink & white terraces) is quite daunting.
The skippers app for the Terraces was amazing.

Scenic lake at the end of the Volcanic Valley trail. Well worth the walk (over an hour) from the visitor centre.

We cruised Lake Rotomahana at the tail end of our visit to Waimangu Geothermal Valley. After the long walk down the hill (4 km) viewing the attractions at Waimangu, it was so relaxing to sit on board the little launch and cruise around this beautiful lake. The ship's captain gave us an excellent commentary about the origins of the lake and showed us the places of interest. This lake was formed with the catastrophic eruption of Mt Tarawera in June 1886. The lake is now 20 times bigger and 170 metres deeper than it was before the eruption which also killed about 120 people and destroyed the magnificent Pink and White Terraces. I fully recommend this lovely cruise as part of your visit to the Waimangu Geothermal Valley.

This beautiful lake on which you can take a boat ride is full of wild birds and lovely scenery at the end of an absolutely stunning walk. Listen out for the frogs that make a lovely noise - I think only at certain times of the year?

We found the boat ride comfortable, with some points of interest along the way, but enjoyed the last 10 minutes the most

We went there as the final part of our visit to the Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Unfortunately, did not have much time to wander around but loved the bird watching spot!

Many points of interest and explanations clearly given. As well as getting a close up view of steaming cliffs and fumaroles, the history and what lies beneath the water was interesting. If nothing else, it was a pleasant boat ride in a relatively untouched environment.

Well worth the boat trip after you've tramped into the valley. Lots of fascinating geothermal points of interest and if you're lucky you'll catch one of the geysers doing its thing! Tickets should be purchased at the visitor centre at the beginning of your walk.
