Experience the unique joy of traveling along a railway line in your own powered self-drive railway vehicle, called a RailCruiser.

The RailCruiser is a fully automated, state of the art petrol-electric four seat self-drive railway vehicle, with comfortable seats and unobstructed views. It is fitted with clear drop down waterproof sides.

Departing from Mamaku Railway Station travel 10km through a majestic 1000 year old native forest, past rolling pastures with views out over Lake Rotorua to Tarukenga Railway Station. After a short break at Tarukenga whilst the RailCruisers are turned, you return in your RailCruiser back to Mamaku.

Cruising along at 20km/hr, you can listen to the audio tour. This is the ultimate way to experience a railway.

We arrived early and was offered free drinks, everything explained to us by staff, did feel it was rather expensive and limited sights, mostly forest but when you realise the work put in to restoring this railway you realise that it's a unique venture, lasted around .1.45mins....no toilets at turnaround point but staff so tell you this. Just realise we... More

We had a fabulous time, although I personally thought it was a little expensive at the time of paying, but when we realised how specialised it really is and the work gone into providing this experience, it was justified. Staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. All things were thoroughly explained in a safety video firstly and then 1:1 to each... More

Just a fantastic way to spend 3 hours - particularly for little kids to enjoy the charms of the railway. Its a moderately scenic route but one that allows you to relax and kick-back while the kids are entertained

A different type of experience that lets you enjoy the scenery around you while listening to the history of the local railway.

This is a great and relaxing activity taking the little rail car along the track through beautiful scenery. One of the definite plus points is your car goes on its own and most of the time you can't see the other cars in sight giving a great sense of privacy even though the groups can be reasonably large. The commentary... More

We had been meaning to try this out for a long time, we are locals and drive past it a lot. Seeing this part of the country was great and doing it in your own little rail car is very unique. The whole experience is riding the rail car down to the next little station, waiting for everyone to turn... More

I am very sorry the commentary did not work for you. Unfortunately, we had an intermittent fault which we could not fix in time for your trip. You are right the commentary is an important part of the full experience. Please contact me and I will provide you with free vouchers so you can undertake the trip again, next with... More

What a fabulous way to spend a couple of hours. The whole experience was very worthwhile. It was safe, extremely pleasant, very interesting commentary while you journeyed down the rails. It was one of those rare moments you don't often discover and won't ever forget. The scenery was special, as was the noise of clicket-e-clack as you went along. Highly... More

Fantastic staff, great fun ride, especially for the kids. A remarkable project to restore the railway. Certainly worth supporting!

Took hubby here as a birthday treat on his 72 birthday and we all enjoyed the experience. It was a beautiful warm day and the bush the track passes through was lush and colourful. The commentary was intelligent and non intrusive and we all came away having learnt something new about the history of the area and NZ Rail.

This is a self guided rail car which is an experience, however it does not have a much to offer anyone who is not a rail enthusiast. It is pricey and would be better if there was more to see and do. Particularly at the point of turn around which has nothing to offer for, what can be, a 30... More
