Stumbled upon the mountain village of Spili while driving from Rethymno to Plakias.
What a lovely village!

The venetian ”lion head” fountains are at the heart of the village. Apparently the water is drinkable as many locals were drinking from the fountain.

Lots of beautiful nooks and crannies around this area including restaurants and little shops!

The central point of the town of Spili. Impressively illuminated in the evening. The life of residents and visitors of Spili is concentrated here. Good quality drinking water.

Just along the road and worth a look. This very original fountain is a must in the village. Nice and very photogenic , if this all you want to see it takes 5 minutes!

This review is under the heading of the Lion Fountain, but the real subject is the village of Spili itself. Spili is a lovely little village in the hills south of Rethymno. It’s full of interesting stores selling locally made goods. There’s one store not to be missed which specializes in herbs and exotic soaps made with fruits and vegetables. The soaps are amazing.

It was during the morning that we visit the place. Not so much to see... Beautiful square to drink you coffee and relax. The monument is worth it to see only if your road pass from there.

Calling this ordinary public sink, rather than fountain, a sightseeing spot is simply manipulation. The vilage of Spili is chilling, pleasant, but nothing much.

Before going to Crete I had seen photos of Spili and particularly wanted to visit. As there were no suitable trips from Rethymnon we decided to do it ourselves by bus. We first had to take a bus to Rethymnon bus station where we purchased our tickets and waited for the connection to Spili. The bus was air conditioned and extremely comfortable, and the bus driver advised us where to get off. It's a beautiful village, cool and shady , and the fountains a charming attraction. The only downside was we were short of time as the bus wasn't too frequent, we either had to get the 12.45 bus back or wait till 16.30 for the next one. If we were doing it again we would take a taxi there (43 euros from our hotel in Rethymnon) and get the bus back to allow more time to explore.

A delightful stopping place to break your journey to the south
Fresh water pouring from many lions heads straight from the mountains
We took coffee nearby and the waitress filled our water bottles from the fountain, delicious!
