Paderne is a small hillside agricultural town with three lovely walks of varying distance, that have been recently signposted to assist tourists.
Starting point is a display board at the back of the car park opposite the Credito Agricola bank. It shows the colour of the path with associated distance and what you see on the walk.

This is a lovely place to see and not many people know of this little beauty hidden away mainly the locals which are very friendly and helpful, the water comes from a spring hence the name Fonte.

Turn right as you come into town and the narrow road passes the Fonte or wells and then winds through olive groves until you come to parking under the freeway. You can drive up to the castle or park here and walk up. If you park also follow the path along the river. You will soon come to a picnic spot and then about 20 min later to the Roman bridge. A very pretty walk.

The Castelo de Paderne is a rather small ruin on a hill top. Much of what was build by the moors has dissapeared. What remains are a few walls and foundations. There has been some restoration work in the past. Unfortunately that didn't do any good to recreate the original. To get to the ruins you have to follow a 2 km dirt road. Not suitable for a low car. I don't recommend a visite: there are many more interesting things to see in the Algarve. I don't even understand why the government and the EU are spending almost 600.000 EUR on a new restoration effort. That's really a waste of taxpayers money. You can hike around the hill, along a small river. This walk starts under the motorway bridge. Take less than an hour for the walk around the hill (enough if you walk to the small medieval bridge) and half an hour for the ruins. Know that while the view from the hill top is nice, the noise from the motorway is disturbing. Unless you have nothing else to do ... there are many more interesting walks and historical sites in the region.

What other village could offer a Vintage Motorcycle Rally, a Motor Rally and a Religious Festival all in one day. The people are super friendly and lots of little bars, cafes and resturants

Parked on the main road and walked into the square where the main church is situated. Lovely area at the side which looks like it's recently been landscaped with a couple of seats and a little water feature. Sat and watched the House Martins/Swallow in and out of the nearby houses, lovely tranquil place. Walked into the church which is very nice and has a few lovely things to look at around the walls. Walked back and stopped at one of the cafes along the road for refreshments which was reasonably priced. Spent about an hour there.

Odd little town, we walked around trying to find the heart of the town, and expected more! Nice church, (is this the centre), and there are three local walks with details on a notice board outside the football ground. Cafes are cheap, and locals are friendly!

Lots to see and do in the local area. Plenty of local eateries that charge locals prices and not Albufeira/ Villamoura prices!
