Enjoyable way to spend an hour when visiting Roskilde. We stopped in our way to the Viking museum. Friendly staff, Tina gave us some maps and local knowledge. The museum was busy with visitors and school kids. There is a nice cafe. Interesting items to view from various stages of Danish History.

Before getting to the permanent exhibits we had a look at the temporary displays. On the theme of waste, we saw a carpet made from discarded rags and fibres. Another was Burning Waste, referencing a major September 2020 fire at a waste plant.
Prehistory is covered from a skeleton of aurochs from more than 6000 BCE, and many other artefacts from long ago, including items from graves.
Schooling is a further category. Well used school desks in a classroom hark back to a previous time. While black and white photographs, including those of eager kids, are evocative.

Not another dusty regional museum with some boring exposition of local history. This museum has lots of interesting artefacts starting from pre-history, everything is very well organized, supported with modern interactive technologies. It gave a great overview of the significance of Roskilde for the Danish history.

This museum displays artefacts from the area of Roskilde: archaological findings from the stoneage to present day. It is a local glimps of Danish history and since it is situated only 200 meters from the big Cathedral it was easy to swing by when visiting the church.
There is a prehistoric exhibition with stone tools and an aurochs. Bronzeage and Ironage artifacts - like the famous Odin figure. A Viking funeral with a strange warroir woman and her slave.
There's also an exhibition of toys and clothing from the 19th century.
The medieval exhibition holds graves, books and coins from that period, where Roskilde was among the most important cities in Denmark and the religious center of the country (which is why the city had 14 churches and 9 monasteries).

We made a day visit from Copenhagen to Roskilde to see the Viking Ship Museum, but decided to also visit the Roskilde Museum. While I was initially only mildly interested in visiting the Roskilde Museum, it turned out to be "the" museum highlight for me on our Denmark trip. The information was super and the collections were varied and so different than other museums I had visited in Denmark. The historical information we learned at this museum was a much needed supplement to our understanding of the Viking era; the political landscape in Denmark; the religious landscape in Denmark; and the history of Roskilde. I highly recommend not missing out on this gem when in Roskilde, and I would go as far to suggest even specifically visiting Roskilde for this museum, and this lovely city.

This spectacularly well designed museum enriches the narrative of the city's entire history. Recently designed exhibits are stupendous, proving that contemporary exhibit design can enhance objects from any era. Excellent use of technology in the galleries, first-rate decisions about the presentation of each era's galleries, and engaging use of a very chopped-up and irregular building(s). Everything about our experience was thoughtful, informative, and a true delight.

The Roskilde museum is a small museum but so much worth visiting. It shows well preserved history of the vikings in Denmark as they founs a real ship in the soil along with ancient artifacts as adults and children will like to see it.
The Danish founders show you all about boat building, archaeology and Viking life.
A guide is willing o show you around and able to tell real stories of the way the vikings lived.
For the childeren there are interactive parts (some cost extra fee) but they love it!

We were greeted at the museum by a lovely lady, who kindly lent us the English guide to the museum rather than selling us one and explained about the free coffee at the end! Not my normal experience being given things for nothing by museums.
Then she talked us through the layout of the museum, which is having some renovations done and off we went. We started in the prehistoric and Viking room - there are some good displays and interesting use of modern art to work with the old pieces. There was a lovely display of coins which made me remember that England and Denmark shared kings in the Anglo-Saxon period for a little - so there was Edward the Confessor and Aethelred the Unready as well as Canute.
Upstairs there are pieces from the Renaissance to the recent past through the history of Roskilde as it expanded and contracted. There is a lovely display of everyday objects under the eaves - beautiful bonnets made locally, dolls, toys and clothes.
Then downstairs we fell in love with the painted roundels presented annually for a shooting club. Each one was painted on a theme relevant to the person it was presented to and they are a lovely display.

Really interesting museum that is small but nicely presented with modern recreations of teh boats you can see and touch and examples of them being built live.
The cafe had great food and was worth a visit too.
We had dogs with us, so had to take it in turns to go inside the ship display but it was worth the visit and very fascinating and fired the imagination.
