Neighbourhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

- Paul I86 contributionsBeautiful building, full of civic prideThis is a beautiful building, full of civic pride, standing in the centre of Copenhagen. Visitors are allowed to pretty well walk around all the main areas and corridors and admire the fantastic architecture and decorative arts. Quite incredibly for Denmark, you don’t get rinsed to get in, it’s completely free! It also has a nice gift shop and the staff there were friendly, giving advice about where to go for a nice coffee.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 June 2024
- PATO-BETOSan Martin, Argentina20,854 contributionsWE WERE ABLE TO ENTER FOR FREEMagnificent building located in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, in the central area of the city. It opened in 1905. It has a romantic Nordic style, the facade decorated with statues, and a clock tower almost a hundred and six meters high. We were able to enter for free to know its interior and the beautiful gardens.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 July 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California19,119 contributionsOfficial City HallVery impressed with how clean and neat this prosperous city is. Good example is the area around the official city hall. A big open square. The hall itself has a tall tower, a landmark for the area. Lots going on inside, but more for the locals than visitors.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2024
- Patrick G36 contributionsA nice place to start with in CopenhagenCity Hall is open to the public and you are free to explore the main halls. The central hall is a wonder! Its a massive space that gets your attention immediately. If you go to the second floor, you can visit the main library which looks like something from a Harry Potter movie. It was a quick visit, but definitely worth it.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 September 2024

If you are a fan of architecture then you will enjoy taking in the beautiful building. - Guglielmo SPalermo, Italy481 contributionsCity Hall: how beautiful!I never thought I would write a review about the town hall and never thought I would enter it but I really liked this practically random visit.... the program was to start the day from the town hall square by visiting everything around (Ripley museum, Anderson, Tivoli, Shopping streets etc.) and almost by chance I decide to enter the Town Hall which however from the outside is a beautiful building.... already the fact that the entrance is free encourages you to look out and practically you are presented with a huge room where citizens and workers do their things anyway (we saw in half an hour 3 weddings and it was fun to see their traditions about it). Then a walk in the upper floors from which you can see the view of the hall on the ground floor with Danish flags to make everything more picturesque.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 October 2024
- Rajesh K KBengaluru, India1,879 contributionsCopenhagen Municipal BuildingThe City Hall is located at the heart of Copenhagen and is the main municipal building. It is over a hundred years old and houses the offices of the mayor and the council. Lots of weddings take place here. There are some nice statues inside. However, I feel there are better sights to see in Copenhagen than the City Hall. The City Halls in Oslo and Stockholm have the Nobel Prize connection - the one in Copenhagen cannot boast of any such.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 November 2024

The City Hall also contains the Jens Olsen clock which is worth seeing and getting to know more about. It is free to visit and well worth popping into.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 November 2024
- Tsetso KSofia, Bulgaria509 contributionsMayor mayor on the wallFantastic architecture. It is probably the building that we have seen the most since it's literally the center and the entrance to the main street of Copenhagen. Inside I spotted two weddings it was lovely. It needs a bit more support from the inside, but over all it's nice building.Visited November 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 December 2024

The City Hall was built between 1892 and 1905. It is free to enter and you get access to the main hall as you go in plus the first and second floor corridors giving elevated views across the main hall. A walk up the staircase to the top floor is particularly worthwhile to view a lovely large Art Nouveau style painting. There is also a 45/60 minute guided tour available three times a day, two in Danish, one in English giving additional access to the areas used for wedding ceremonies but we didn't take this.
Although it is firmly Danish in design there are numerous Art Nouveau influences throughout the building. The attention to detail is amazing with beautiful design touches anywhere you look. Certainly worth taking an hour out of you schedule to view the building.

This beautiful building offers free admission and a treasure trove of Nordic myths and history. The guided tour in English, available Monday to Friday at 1 pm and Saturday at 10 am, is a highlight not to be missed.
The guide's depth of knowledge about Nordic myths is truly impressive, making the tour amazingly informative and engaging. The majestic architecture of the building only adds to the immersive experience.
Overall, visiting this site is a must for anyone interested in Nordic culture and history. It's an unforgettable journey into the heart of ancient myths and legends.

The town hall is impressive on the outside with its numerous, partly gold-plated decorations, and can also be entered by tourists during the day. There are around 280 steps leading up to the tower (I saved myself the trouble) but it is said to offer a great view of the city. It is easily accessible by metro or various bus lines.

City Hall was built in the early 1900’s. Used every Saturday for weddings. Nobel dinner is held annually in the Blue Room, downstairs, and dancing and entertaining in the Gold Room, upstairs. Gold Room initially used for dinners but they outgrew the space. Gold Room made up of glass coated gold leaf in mosaic style. One end of room tells story of uniting the eastern and western worlds. Other end tells the story of how the architect screwed up and cut off the heads at the top of the wall. The Blue Room has a large set of organ pipes mounted along the ceiling. A long table is set for the Nobel Prize dinner with side tables shooting off the center table.
All past Laurits are welcome in addition to the new inductees. Two hundred college students also attend from winning a lottery. The architect who designed the building added his bust over a doorway in the Blue Hall.

City Hall, as well as the plaza at which it sits, give visitors some nice photo ops, even on rainy days (like when I was there, sigh). Nearby is the lovely pedestrian shopping street Stroeget, as well as many hotels and restaurants. Being such a walkable city, it’s straightforward to access City Hall from most popular areas of the Danish capital. Lots of tourists could be seen snapping pictures and enjoying themselves.
Don’t spend a ton of time here, but still make the stop!

I think this site is grossly underrated because few people seem to take the tour. Our guide took us through countless halls and rooms, including the city council chamber, that are not accessible without a tour, and he explained some of the hundreds of symbols represented in the art and architecture. It was an amazing experience that offered a much deeper understanding of the city's culture and history.

The true highlight of the city hall is Jens Olsen's World Clock. It's located in a small room on the right just inside the main door. The clock displays not just the time but celestial pole migration, solar time, sunrise and sunsets, planet revolutions, the Gregorian calendar and more. An intriguing piece of machinery.

Everything happens outside of the City Hall. In my time here I saw walking tours start from here, football matches, choirs singing, dancing with DJ. I went in on one of the days and there was a careers convention going on, and also a couple of wedding groups having photos taken. I went upstairs, and found a reading room, which was so peaceful, and beautiful. I also walked post some of the operating offices, and they were very open and spacey. I would definitely visit here again if in Copenhagen.

It is located near the metro station and free to enter. The staircase is gorgeous. Paintings are beautiful. At the entrance, there is the stunning Astronomical World Clock designed and calculated by Jens Olsen. The intricate gears, weights and dials can be easily seen from all directions. It cannot be missed.

Called in at the City Hall specifically to see the World Clock, which is to the right of the entrance and free to look at. All the cogs and mechanisms of this extraordinary timepiece can be seen at the back of the various clock faces, which are all linked. The clockwork glows golden and the tiny movements of some of the cogs is fascinating. Photos and explanations on the walls are in English and Danish; the story of the clock is inspiring. It’s a shame that the little gift shop doesn’t sell wind-up watches - I would have bought one in an instant!

Wouldn't have thought you could take animals inside, just in case they have an accident. Many people use this place.

I was just a simple visitor but there´s a special Copenhagen municipality website for weddings with lots of detail and contact numbers.
TripAdvisor doesn´t let me put the link.
