This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

This place is absolutely horrendous and in no way deserving of the hype. Immediately as you approach Christiania, you can tell what you're in for - weird sketchy types trudging around looking tense and nervous, police all over the place. There are signs warning you...More

I walked through the area in December, so perhaps I did not see it at its best. It was quiet and I didn't think that there was anything inspirational about it.

This area is so unique it really stands out in my mind. Copenhagen is a wonderful city but having this area really shows how open the culture is and understanding. Its a fun place to walk through and experience the more hippie vibe

If you like wandering round a former barracks which has been squatted by a disparate collective of hippies, this is the place to visit. Never sure if the free-wheeling types here are putting on an act for the north-face clad tourists, or if the crystal-meth...More

We walked over via the pedestrian bridge from Nyhavn & found it quite easily. There were some shops with unique items and fairly good prices. There was also a Christmas market that had quite a bit of different items compared to the other markets. We...More

Christiania is a special place in Copenhagen and home to very friendly people. Worth a visit for all purposes ;-)

Worth seeing if you are on part of a tour, and good to see the city has preserved it. That being said, definitely had a dodgy feel to it. Lots of blokes staring at us and strong police presence.

It is a very hippie place, where people have build their own homes with what ever materials they could find. Kind of feels like you are visiting the 70'ies....

Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By,
you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old
brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century,
and canals which are home to many boats and ships,
some of which has been turned into restaurants or even
serve as fully furnished homes. The best known
attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free
town” of residents who squat on a former military

I guess you have to accept it for what it is. It's a community and home to many people who enjoy this way of life. Personally I wouldn't choose to live there myself as myself and my family have different needs but I can... More
