This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

While the scantily dressed nymph Callisto is lost in thought, she fails to notice that Jupiter, the lovesick ruler of the gods, is watching her. I did not know whether I was going to be able to get out of bed this morning. You see, last night I was visited by a supernatural seductress who was after my soul, or... More

Awesome alternative place to visit. The women's blacksmith workshop is definitely a place to visit. Of course Pusher St should be avoided if you are with children. Highly recommend.

Freetown Christiania is a mix of homemade houses, workshops, art galleries, music venues, and beautiful nature with the lake side walk and views. Y Yes, you need to go down through Pusher Street with people openly buying hash. However just keep walking and admire this community of houses and buildings. Really an interesting part of Copenhagen.

Definitely one to miss. We passed many pretty places on our walk there but this place is well past its sell by date and is grubby and in need or urban regeneration. Some angry dogs around and very scruffy people. Food stalls looked grubby too. I would not like to visit here after dusk. I don't think I'd recommend anyone... More

To be honest, this is a good place worth for visit when you are in Copenhagen. You may have a strange feeling when the first visit here, but soon and later you will feel relax and enjoy the environment. Is a kind of place full of "special smell". Is another face of Copenhagen. Remember, this place is not allowed to... More

This is an interesting place in the sense that you will likely have never seen anything like it before. It is basically a community of people who want to live an alternate lifestyle to the mainstream. It's kind of what you would expect a small town to be like in a post apocalyptic world, and I mean that in the... More

A quaint little town with a very open culture. A must visit for any tourist to enjoy the less urban materialistic lifestyles in the capital. Certain areas forbid photography so best to keep your eyes out for signs

If you are looking to visit something slightly different then a trip to Christiania is on the cards. A very free spirited self organised society within the walls of Copenhagen. Keep an open mind.

Strange feelings ... colorful ... still one could try taking care of all the garbage, rust, leftovers scattered all over the place ... it turns down any desire or attempt for consuming whatever offered in the area ...

Don't waste your time even stepping inside. It's an awful, dirty waste of space. Such a pity, as the rest of Copenehgen and Nyhaven is spotlessly clean and lovely.

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
