Top ways to experience Kastellet
The area
Neighbourhood: Inner Oesterbro
Home to the largest number of embassies in Copenhagen, Inner Oesterbro has Østerbrogade and Nordre Frihavnsgade streets where shopping for clothes and modern Danish design is a must, particularly if you're not on at budget. There exists a great array of cafés and restaurants, from the reasonably priced to pricier Michelin ones. Fælledparken, one of the largest recreational areas in Denmark, is a park home to the Copenhagen Carnival as well as one of the world’s largest relay runs, with thousands of teams competing over several days.

Kastellet does not disappoint
Sep 2021 • Solo
As a British ex-serviceman I find military history fascinating. Kastellet was no disappointment covering a huge historical time line it is a place well worth a visit. For me having lost close friends in battle the most poignant place hear was the garden of remembrance for those Danish soldiers lost in battle.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Good for a Walk
Aug 2021
Really lovely place to go for a walk. Very interesting place and layout, however, I do wish there was more signage explaining the place. You only really see a map on the way in, and the rest of the time we were guessing the history from common sense in terms of the buildings and structure. We left with no idea why it was there in the first place, no clue who it was protecting when built, just that it was being very well preserved. Pretty good for basic bird watching. The most exciting thing I saw was a woodpecker, but there were also gulls, corvids, ducks, and swans.

Another Awesome Place to Walk in Copenhagen
May 2021
This is one of my favorite places to walk in Copenhagen. The Kastellet is a 17th century earthen-work star fortress and is the most complete fortress of it's type remaining in Europe. The interior is still and active military post. You can walk on the top around the five bastions and walls with a nice view of the city and harbor. The water in the moat has a number of egrets, swans, ducks, geese, and other waterfowl. Great history combined with some exercise makes this one of my favorite places. It is very common to see Danes walking or running around the paths.

Worth to come for a walk :) Nice views and you can see Trekroner Fort from Kastellet island. Also, there are a lot of benches.

Well preserved fortress
Sep 2019
First of all it's free, so in an expensive city, this must be a bonus. The whole area is so well kept, with good paths for walking and exploring. Built in a pentagon shape surrounded by a moat there are number of buildings located within the grounds, a church, windmill and old military barracks. Lovely place to spend an hour strolling round and quite photogenic especially if you are interested in photography.

The grounds and moats of the Kastellet fortress are beautiful to walk around. The scenery is very pretty. There is no cost to explore the area.

Charming and peaceful
Jul 2019
Nice to have a wander through Kastellet late one summer's afternoon. This is a pentagon shaped fortress dating back to the seventeenth century. It is well preserved. Apparently saw use in 1807 in the Battle of Copenhagen against those pesky Brits!

Another oasis of calm in Copenhagen
Oct 2019
There's not a whole lot to "do," necessarily, at this former 5-pointed fortress, but that's kind of the point.

Take the hand of your beloved one, stroll around the perimeter, and enjoy the views of water and windmill.

Pair it with Designmuseum, Amalienborg Palace and Frederiks Kirke, and you have a satisfying and memorable afternoon.

Pretty place to walk
Feb 2020
Nothing open on a Feb morning, but a pretty place to walk even so. Walk around the walls, stretch your legs, watch the dog walkers. We combined this with walk around the outer canals, very pleasant on a sunny day.
