The drive through the Taygetus mountains is stunning with lots of hairpin bends to add interest.
We stopped twice once for coffee at the top at a tavern 2,400m high then for an amazing traditional Greek lunch on the way down which was fantastic.

For first time visitors to the area it was difficult to appreciate the ruggedness of these mountains beforehand by just looking a t a map. An easy (but not thorough) way to view them is the drive between Sparta and Kalamata which is almost a requirement anyway if your doing a circle tour of the Peloponnese. The roads have many switchbacks going up and down but our little rental Fiat Panda with it's 1200cc engine actually did surprisingly well at the slower speeds required on these type of roads. If you have a sportier car you can have a lot of fun on this road.
About 1/3 of the way from Sparta there is a pullout with a shrine where we saw vehicles and stopped for a picture. There were climbers with gear getting out of their minibus and we turned around to notice the north side of the canyon had rock climbers ascending it's walls. Continuing you'll see rock walls overhanging the roads and as elsewhere in Greece watch out for the sheep!
There is one restaurant to stop at the summit and one (listed on Tripadvisor) on the west face of the mountains if you want to stop to eat. We ate at Mystras before leaving and weren't hungry.

The drive over the Taygetus Mountains between Kalamata and Sparta is just fantastic. Spectacular views as you go through the Langada pass at 5,000 ft above sea level. We started from Stoupa where we were staying drove to Sparta (take the old road, no tolls and best view) then made it a round trip by going onto Aeropolis and back up the coast to Stoupa. A great day out.

Based on trip advisor reviews we decided to drive down to Kalamata from Sparta based following the mountain route.
This is no drive for the faint hearted as there are numerous, and I do mean a lot, hair-pin bends where you turn 180 degrees on yourself as you climb up the mountain roads. For the tourist whilst you do not need a 4-wheel drive SUV, I would recommend an automatic car so you can concentrate on driving rather than be distracted by changing gears on the narrow, steeply climbing bends. You cannot afford to lose concentration as the drops are quite sheer in places.
What you do get in return for your perseverance are some of the most spectacular views of mountains and deep valleys, some dense with pine trees other just naked rock. Part of the road seemed to be cut of the mountain itself with overhanging rock above, but really breathtaking.
Little villages pop up out of nowhere and my favourite was Saint Petros, a picturesque place with a small square where you can sit with the locals and have a coffee and a sweet dessert. It was a welcome break from the driving and we also bought locally made honey from the shop opposite and visited the Orthodox church adjacent.

We set out from Xirkambi with some good local advice on the walking trails into the mountains. We obtained a good map published by Anasazi (Topo 25) that covered the area. Left the car near the small village of Koumousta which is largely abandoned but one couple Dimitri and Annie still live there and will assist if approached. The trail we took lead to Ghola Monastery through forests along a lovely stream. The monastery did not appear open but provides a great foreground for photos of the towering mountains. Walk took about 2-3 hours comfortably and the track was well marked.

The drive across the taygetus mountain was one of my favorite things about my time in southern Greece. This is a beautiful scenic excursion that can be enjoyed in one of two ways: either a nice slow drive taking in all the beauty of nature, the sporadic stops along the way to get an eyeful of the gorgeous view and taking the time to pick up some sweets that are made on the mountain itself. The other way is with a rear wheel drive sports car and some seriously grippy tires. This is one of the most exhilarating drives I have done, for both those ways of enjoying it.

It was named after Taygetus, the daughter of the Atlas, while his tallest peak was called Talent. But the Maniates call him Makrinos Elias. According to Nfaffa:
"All the old Spartans were saying to him
and Makrinon the elder Elias the Maniates ".
From the East Mani section of the peak of Taygetos gives the image of a closed hand, a punch, and the five shoulders gave the name Pentadaktylos.
Especially for the Maniates in Mani, which, according to Nikiforos Vrettakos, we find the "erosion of the sun and the stone", Taygetos is a symbol, since on its slopes and mountain peaks the flames of Freedom were preserved. There, refugees found shelter and there are many heroic moments written by our ancestors. There they built their villages, of which the State has recognized 98 traditional settlements out of the 118 that are found throughout the Peloponnese.
The visitor can enjoy caving, mountain biking, hiking and mountaineering routes on the slopes or gorges of the mountain, routes that are analyzed on our website, in the same section.

This hike is exceptional in spring with the path leading up through a pine forest with glorious bird song and the delicate wildflowers such as cyclamen, crocus and primrose just emerging. The trailhead was a challenge to find because we could not read the Greek for Refuge, Katafiyo. Turn off the road going south out of Sparti at the village of Anogia. Continue on to the village of Paleopanagia but do not exit the town. About midway through the small village there is a huge blue sign pointing to turn right. Among the list of destinations is Magganiari, which is close to the trailhead. Follow the twists and turns till you reach a small car park by a babbling brook. The trail is marked clearly by a red square all the way to the refuge. The trail goes onto a dirt road for awhile so look out for the red squares that will take you back into the forest. It is a steep climb in parts and we had a bit of snow to cross near the top. If you wish to go to the summit, allow another 2 1/2 hours. At the refuge you will have a confluence of the E4 and other trails off to different directions. Stunning hike with the snow capped peak beckoning all the way.

We did not jphike the mountains, however they surround Sparta and Mystras. The views of the mountains are majestic. Such serene and peaceful.

At mountain there is a shelter but isn't good choice. You can stay at Kalamata city that begins Taygetos
