- SvenskaMobRichmond, Virginia69 contributionsSuperb MuseumAn absolutely fascinating dive into the history, legacy and culture of the Byzantine world. Beautifully curated and thoughtfully explained. Many beautiful artifacts which bring the entire story to life. Very friendly staff. Definitely a highlight of our three days in Thessaloniki.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 November 2023
- Fiona GFloreat, Australia132 contributionsInteresting and detailed MuseumWe had a morning to fill before our flight and had read that this was one of the best Byzantine collections. The museum was very well set out with clear labelling and descriptions of items on display, the detail of what had been recovered from sites in the local area were amazing with great examples of living quarters, tombs and other aspects of life in the Thessaloniki region from 3AD onwards. Also showing how the museum preserves the items was fascinating. There are free audio guides to download which also gave detailed information. The downer was that several of the rooms were closed to the public so instead of 10 displays to see, I think we saw only 7 rooms.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 May 2024
- SofiaAthens, Greece90 contributionsGreat museum, worth a visit!A great museum if you're interested in Byzantine history and culture! I loved how it helped me understand a little bit about many different aspects of Byzantine times, without being too bored or tired. Definitely a must if you have time to spare in Thessaloniki!Visited June 2024Travelled on businessWritten 12 June 2024

I had a great experience with the museum of Byzantine culture. Firstly, the staff at the entrance is very helpful with all the important information a visitor needs to get the best experience and the rest of the staff inside is also friendly.
The museum per se is very well organized, it is made up by 11 rooms, each dedicated to a different aspect of the Byzantine life-style. Although it is going to be a 3-4 hour visit (if done properly), I suggest you download the app for the audioguide, which by the way gave me chills when listening to it. It really makes it easy to imagine how life was back than.
Thank you for your efforts!!

The Museum of Byzantine Culture was an okay place overall.
In general, the museum (exhibits) were pretty good, although the displays were quite dry.
The staff and exhibit-advisors were not very engaged or nice, they (the exhibitors and guide-persons) remained seated during all of our excursion, did not speak to us once about the exhibits, but rather to make our family feel very uncomfortable and watching us extremely closely. It felt very cold.
The gift store was nice if you're looking for either notebooks, diaries, or very expensive statues.

What a lovely museum! We truly enjoyed our visit there, especially the interactive capability to scan a QR code and see what some of the partial displays would have looked like at the height of their glory.
We enjoyed the leisurely pace we were able to take through the museum, never feeling rushed.
The gift shop left a little to be desired, but we noticed that in most of the gift shops we visited in Greece. We really wanted a book from the museum, about the museum, instead of just general books about Byzantine culture. Obviously this is not a huge issue...you can still enjoy the museum without the shop! Ha!
Also, visit the restaurant on site for lunch. Everything was fabulous, particularly my mushroom risotto! They were excellent at recognizing my gluten allergy.

Impressive and very interesting museum that presents the whole richness of the Byzantine era Thessaloniki. The museum is very well organised in a nice and large building, wiht a good balance between different periods and lots of attention for daily life. Well worth a visit !

Recent museum in which throughout the rooms we discover Byzantine sculptures, then reproductions of tombs where the deceased were buried with jewelry. One of the last rooms shows a collection of around sixty remarkable icons including the “nursing virgin”. Modest entry: €4 for seniors.

Once you survived the pedestrian-hostile area and processed the shockingly brutal exterior of the museum, this is actually a quite brilliant and well-organised museum. The exhibition spirals up, making it very accessible and organised. Obviously gorgeous exhibits, being byzantine.
The message above about the museum being temporarily closed is obsolete, as we visited on 22 sept 2023 and it was very much open.

Entrance = €8 (€4 if European and > 65 years old). The museum (1994) was designed by architect Kyriakos KRONOS (1941-1998) and includes 11 rooms. This allows us to understand the cultural influence of Byzantium (from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 until the capture of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453) on Greece thanks to the exhibition of mosaics, capitals , fragments of churches (room 1), amphorae (room 2), tombs (room 3), coins (room 5), icons, glazed pottery (room 7). Presence of a video (subtitled in English) on the eastern district of Thessaloniki. The museum restaurant is closed.

Imaginative architecture displays collections so well. The tombs are particularly interesting, and very different fom those we have seen elsewhere. The only downer we experienced was the closure of the upper flor - budget constraints ? Great museum guards / attendants who all spoke English (useful for us !)

Our Children chose to come to the museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, as part of our City Break. It turned out to be an excellent choice. A beautifully curated museum that clearly demonstrated the link between classical Greece & Rome, through to modern times. While the west experienced The Dark Ages, Greece & Byzantium flourished for another 1000 years!
Particularly interesting to see how similar people's daily lives & concerns are to today.
An additional highlight of our visit was the excellent cafe / restaurant.

The museum is not closed. We went to this museum yesterday. No admission fee yesterday due to some European cultural event. Excellent museum with a nice layout and not overwhelming. Highly recommended
