- Peter WShrewsbury, United Kingdom849 contributionsMust see destinationOne of the most photographed islands in the aegean, Santorini is simple stunning and Oia is the jewel in the crown. Well maintained paved paths are very touristy and full of shops, restaurants and bars. Fantastic place for a day visit but hellishly expensive to stay there. A "must see" venue.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 18 November 2023
- Stephanie SRoseland, New Jersey1,419 contributionsBucket list, destination, but very crowdedSantorini has been one of my bucket list destinations all my life. I’m so happy and lucky I was finally able to go there last week. There’s one main street that breaks off into many other little streets and areas in Santorini. While it’s absolutely stunning I do have to say it was very crowded which I knew going into it. There were four cruise ships there that day that let off 11,000 people, as well as the other travelers who came to Santorini and the people who live there. There are so many little shops and restaurants. The views are fantastic though! Very glad I was able to see it, but if you don’t like crowds, it may not be for you.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 July 2024
- laczkozsuDebrecen, Hungary2,326 contributionsOne of the most picturesque villages in SantoriniWe stayed in Karterádhos and visited this stunning village by bus. We spent almost all day there and enjoyed its special atmosphere. It was nice to walk among the white houses, through the narrow cobbled streets. We also admired the colourful exotic flowers. There were many tourists, but everyone waited patiently for us to take photos at the photo points. The views were breathtaking. Oia is a must-see for everyone on the island.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2024
- J CSunderland, United Kingdom428 contributionsMade me grin from Oia to OiaWe visited Oia for see the iconic blue domes. We arrived early to have a look round the area as well. First we visited the main street, this was jam packed with visitors to the island looking for the iconic sunset. The buildings are beautiful however the streets are very narrow making people who are stopping to take photos quite an obstacle. We did manage to see the sunset in the end we decided to stay away from the busiest area because it was too busy at that point and people were pushing for photographs. We found some lovely little side streets with various shops and restaurants and also some hidden view points. If on the island, go to Oia and check it out.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 August 2024

I first visited Santorini back in 1973 as a child, Oia was a small, typical traditional Greek village. The dirt road taking you there was to dangerous to drive on, narrow, full of holes and stones. Then in 1987, it had already started becoming popular, but there was definitely''something''. Was it the art galleries? Was it the stylish boutiques? Was it the artists living and painting in their shops? Was it the different restaurants, bars?? Was it the old port ''Ammoudi'', with its 2 tavernas, no lights, difficult to get there? And now, in 2020,Oia has lost it all!! It is famous ONLY for the sunset; this brings more than 15000 people only for this, creating thousands of problems. Traffic jam,no parking, people pushing each other to get a better spot for THE photo, coughing and sneezing to your face, tons of thrown plastic bottles and napkins, not leaving a single penny to the shops.Super expensive prices ( 6,5 euros for cappuccino!!) And just after sunset back to the car and a huge convoy. Ammoudi now has 7 super expensive tavernas, calling you to sit, serving frozen fish for fresh and whatever comes with it!! Pity, pity, pity. And believe me, a beautiful sunset is a beautiful sunset everywhere in the world.

Oia is the prettiest little town but it was lost on me because it was so crowded. The main street is a jostling, hot and sweaty throng of people. I wanted to like it, but it was just so unpleasantly congested.
One of the sought after photos here is a shot of the three blue domed churches, built on the cliff overlooking the caldera and the Aegean Sea. It is a stunning sight but to see it, you have to join the long, long queue that snakes around the corner and moves forward, inch by inch, to get closer to that famous shot. I gave up and snapped what I could.
The street is lined with tourist shops, boutiques, jewellery shops and cafes. We stopped for a drink at Melenio, where we sat overlooking the sea. This was a slight reprieve.
Overall, we enjoyed Oia a lot more when we started to move away from the main street. The ruins of the castle of St Nicholas was a nice, open spot for views and, from here, we walked down the donkey trail to Amoudi Bay which was very picturesque.
GETTING THERE: We walked to Oia on the Fira-Oia Trail but caught a bus back (€1.60pp) Buses run every 30 minutes or so but it’s not a strict schedule. They are often crammed full and we missed the first bus but the next one came along quite quickly. In peak season, you almost certainly won’t get on the first bus and will probably have to wait a while to get on.

Beautiful views over The Caldera but the crowded streets spoil the experience. As the cruise ship extortions arrive in Oia there’s hardly room to move especially where the streets narrow off. Also the prices restaurants & bars are charging are extortionate so be aware it’s going to be a really expensive place to stay. Having been to the island for a week staying in Oia we felt it wasn’t the kind of “Greece” we know and love. We won’t return.

Oia is an exceedingly popular place especially during the day and close to sunset. It's so crowded that its not easy to take pics. If you don't intend to shop or eat here, then visit early in the morning before all the activities start. That's when the place is much less crowded and easier to get good pics taken.

We took a trip to the village of Oia on the island of Santorini during a one day stopover on a cruise ship on a Monday in June. We was on an organised coach trip visiting various points around the island. The village of Oia appears in most of the publicity material for Santorini with its cubed white walled buildings and blue domed roofs.
Our coach dropped us at a large car park inland of the village and here you will find (pay to use) public toilets should you need them, the village is a short walk from here. On the day of our visit, there were two cruise ships in the harbour including our own and so Oia was fairly busy with tourists. The village sits on the edge of the cliffs and almost cascades down the cliffside towards the sea. Narrow streets run along the top of the cliff edge and from these lead the small passageways from which you will gain the classic views.
Thera are plenty of shops if you wish to purchase a souvenir of our visit, we collect porcelain thimbles and were able to purchase one here, and there are restaurants and cafes if you are looking for refreshments.
We were told that many of the buildings here are exclusive hotels and if so the residents must find themselves continually overlooked by tourists looking for the perfect view of the village. If you are visiting on a busy day and are looking for the classic views either to just enjoy or to photograph, be patient and you will get that memorable shot!

Didn’t stay for sunset as felt the crowds might spoil the experience and suspect the view at Imerovigli are better. However did enjoy a couple of hours exploring this beautiful maze of paths and alleyways at the northern tip of the island.. Gas a very upmarket feel to it and looking at the restaurants and bars prices to match!

Very picturesque location, superb views, but just too many people to enjoy it . Found a place in a car park that was €12 for 5 hours. We lasted about an hour before we gave it up. Just throngs of people walking up and down, crowding round the view points to get the photograph. It is pretty much just shops and restaurants, a shopping mall basically, in a beautiful location. We came about 22 years ago and it was very different then. Yes it is picturesque, but it is not really a real place anymore in my opinion, just a tourist trap that is far far too crowded. Go as early in the morning as you can if you do go, as the crowds build up very quickly during the day. I dread to think what it is like in peak season. I apologise to the people who will disagree with me and think it is a must see place this is just my opinion.

We done a boat trip to the volcano hot springs and Oia sunset. We were dropped off at the port of Oia and had to climb the pathway to the village. My god what a challenge in 35 Deg heat. Oia itself is a beautiful beautiful village but coming to the time of the sunset was totally chaos. Thousands and thousands of people descend on the village trying to get the best spot . The sunset was beautiful but I can honestly say it's not the best I've seen . I've definitely saw better sunsets especially in Florida . After the sunset all Pandemonium let loose . Trying to get out the village was worse than leaving a football match ! The tiny streets couldn't cope with the volume of traffic . It was actually quite scary. We eventually arrived at the bus station and was greeted with complete chaos .! Hundred s of cars quads and buses all trying to leave the village by one tiny narrow road . Not to mention traffic also trying to get into the village. It took an hour and a half just to get out the car park and then another 40 mins to actually get out the village . It was total mayhem ! Was asked later by a couple we met at our hotel was it worth it and I can honestly say no ! They said they'd had the same Reply from every one they asked .... Too stressful. Maybe it was just because the month of July is very busy and cruise ships were in but I would rather have viewed it on YouTube

Oia is gorgeous. It is the picturesque place you imagine when you think of Greece. I think every photoI took there could be on a postcard, and not because of my talent, but because of the beauty. However, this is not a well-kept secret, so the town is overrun with people. The streets are made for walking, but on a cliffside, nothing is flat. The roads go up and down, and for some, that is pretty exhausting. We were there with a guide, and, trying to see too much in one day, felt like we missed a lot, by not having time to shop and explore the streets. Nonetheless, it is so beautiful and there is so much to see.

How do I get from the cruise port to Oia and back? Taxi or bus? Is it easy or do I have to pre-arrange?

Any advice on how to find the famous blue dome from the pictures from Santorini?
Written 7 August 2018
Most of the little side streets will take you to that point .. there is a great spot though on the roof of a little book shop and the street just after as well. Wen walking the little streets try get to the left as quick as you can and you should find it :) good luck.

How do I get from Perissa to Oia on public transport
Written 2 June 2018
Hi wherever you are staying on Santorini you have to go via Fira, we stayed in Kamari & had to do this, the bus station there is very small, about 5 buses it holds so you can’t get lose getting off 1 bus & onto another. We found the cost was either 2 Euros or 1 Euro sixty wherever you went, but beware! They don’t do Heath & safety as the buses are always over full with people standing & even sat on the steps by the driver! All good fun! Have a great though

There is a local bus as well going from centre to centre ... Under 2 euros
