As the previous reviews rightly state, you can no longer get into the actual caves. My review is more for the lovely old man who has a stall by the caves. He sells lovely handmade marble items and is clearly passionate about what he does. The prices are very reasonable too - we bought a statue and a carved dice for €22 total. Definitely worth stopping by especially if you’re going to Lefkes as it’s just outside.

Go for it !!! There isn't much to do on Paros, but just going there to meet the little gentleman and his smile in his shop is DEFINITELY worth the trip. An enthusiast that unfortunately we find less and less. Top of the top go ahead

This place is older than the Parthenon! Think about that? It has been hollowed out from the inside like the Great Pyramid. The ceiling is the same slope same angle! My dog BuBu would not go down there. The energy was too powerful! He kept barking the whole time we were down there. When we finally came out hours later it was like he didn't even know us. It was like he was seeing a ghost! I had to beat him silly to bring him back to his senses. Really weird? That is probably why They don't advertise it! Too many old pre-Egyptian spirits haunt the place. The place is cursed but They won't tell you that! Everyone on Paros is afraid of this energy. Be careful. Nobody will miss you if you don't come back! Strange place. And don't say you weren't warned. p.s. George Bush's daughter was there and look what happened to her! This family has not been the same ever since!

The 2 galleries of the ancient marble mine are an outstanding, magnificent statement of the greatness of the human power!
It is mindblowing, when one sees what the ancient worker did with his bare hands...
The mine is 190m long and gave the raw material for the most famous masterpieces to be born. Afrodite of Milos, the winged Victory of Samothrace, Hermes of Praxiteles, but also eternal monuments, such as the ancient Agora of Athens, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the temple of Solomon are made from this translucent white stone. It is the most clear of all marbles, 5-8cm transparency!
If you are well equiped (shoes, flash lights...) and brave enough, you must take these 2 steep downhill paths. Ignore the signs that forbid you to enter and be extra carefull.
There is an ancient petroglyph, vandalised and now protected by metal bars, near the entrance of the right gallery ("The cave of the Nymphs").
The left gallery is wider, bigger and longer. If you go deep down enough, you can see traces of marble and at the end, other galleries, right and left.
It is a big shame that this extraordinary place is deserted, whith no signing and touristic development. If "Marathi's ancient quarry" was in another country, people would come in hundreds to admire it...

Please, I warn you now, do not waste your time visiting these quarries. There is NOTHING to see. There is no parking, so it's mostly hikers that visit the place. They have no signs or information whatsoever, and there is just a few dark caves where the ancient marble had been mined that have fences with forbidden to enter signs around them. Not worth the visit, go visit the sites in Lefke, Parikia, Naoussa, or any of the several beautiful beaches on the islands, but please don't waste your time here.

So this is among the oddest tourist sites I have ever been to - a bit hard to find. When you follow the signs of the main rod you ar directed to a long winding dirt road. At some point not too farin when you start seeing some ancient preserved buildings, there is a fork in the road with a smaller road going down hill to the left. Take it and after you do a hard bend the road you are at the site. No real sign indicate that you are there - but there is a small local shack/ house where a local family has made small marble tchockes - osrt of a wonderfully authentic gift shop. You will also see a fence that says something like "too dangerous do not proceed". The fence IN NO MANNER protects the area or even attempts to make it inaccessible. So you walk around it and you are immediately treated to the entrance to old marble mines. We walked to the entrance and few steps inside but were not more intrepid - but it was really evocative. If this were on a more travelled island - a lot more money would be poured into it to make it a real tourist destination - I prefer this iteration - very much a discovery in the rough.

I would like to add to previous review that you can cross from one shaft to the other with a little crouching--torches are required.
Also near the bottom of the left shaft is a side tunnel that opens into a cavern that well illustrates the mining techniques.

A quiet, somewhat off the beaten path archeological site. The marble for the Venus de Milos (it was found on the island of Milos) came from the ten-knowned Paros quarries - so it is a truly magical spot. Visit it in the late afternoon or very early in the morning and wear proper hiking shoes.

The gate is closed and there is a new fence that makes the access to the marble quarries impossible without climbing equipment. What a pitty that there is nothing to see here anymore that would be worth a visit.
