The beach is lovely and all of the local sun bed providers are very nice people however there is a group of between 5 and 10 ‘locals’ who appear at about 1430 hours, commandeer sun beds without paying and proceed to play very aggressive and very loudly with their bat and ball. They are adults aged between 30 to 50 and don’t strike me as true locals as they are very intimidating, maybe Albanian or something similar. The local police were called on two occasions on separate days and did very little however did get them to stop after much arguing, however they just returned the next day and went on as if they owned the place. The poor sun bed providers could not help and as a result we moved further along the beach to another sun bed provider however even with headphones on we could still hear them. A lovely place spoiled by these arrogant and intimidating individuals, who apparently go there all of the time!

I was saying in Crete for a week, and we walked to the old town on the beach- amazing! There are loads of sun beads to relax on, but some are for hotel guests only, as some hotels have a private section of the beach to themselves. It’s a beautiful, very clean beach. The sand can get very hot, so make sure you wearing shoes when your on it! The beach is massive and stretches miles. Along the beach, there are things like jet skis and other water based activities that you can get up to as well! It’s lovely to spend a day there and I would recommend it :)

The second longest beach in Crete. With ≈1000 beach umbrellas, showers everywhere, changing rooms everywhere and stairs everywhere too!

This long town beach has it's high and low points as most long town beaches experience. There are better areas than others and this depends both on the franchise operating the different sections and their beach cleaning disciplines and the sun lounger area quality. The weather plays an important part of this and of course the tidal flow which also affects the amount of shale/stones/pebbles that the strength of the tide throws up on the waters edge. Not a particularly good walking beach as the conditions can vary in a matter of metres.Very busy though on warm sunny days..Immediately behind the beach is a good paved promenade stretching the whole length which is good for walking and for the those less abled with Cafes restaurants and shops a plenty.A busy road also runs the whole length with crossing points but wait for traffic to indicate they are stopping to let you cross as often they do not.I was pleased to see this year all the electric scooter hire points have been removed after so many incidents caused by a number of the type of people who ride them often as young as 14.
Hire scooters are still offered by some car and motor cycle firms but the seafront plague has vanished thank goodness.

Plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas to rent - but not too crammed together, which was nice. lots of water sports available if wanted - banana boats, paragliding, jet-ski safaris etc.

The main reason I rated this beach low is because of the water, the waves were incredibly strong and the water did not calm all afternoon so we couldn’t really enjoy it as we didn’t feel safe. However there were plenty of sun beds and shade to lie in for an alright price and lots of places to eat/drink/shop nearby. It was quite busy though especially on the main road behind the beach and parking wasn’t the easiest either.

Before going to Rethymno for the first time, we read several reviews of the beach. Some weren’t so good but I’m pleased to say that our visit was fine.

You can walk to the beach from the old town - if it’s too hot , it’s €6 in a taxi.
We rented x2 loungers and umbrella for €9 for the day. The loungers were run by a nearby restaurant but there was no obligation to eat there or purchase anything (we didn’t).

It’s easy to get into the sea - which is warm compared to Spain. A few pebbles but nothing much. As for cleanliness- we’ll, it’s not spotless. There is a little little and a few twigs etc but it’s a city beach. I’ve seen worse in other countries. It’s not an issue really.
Plenty of bars and restaurants a ross the road. It’s safe to leave your stuff while you have lunch.

Enjoy
