Lovely fortress, worth a look!

Lovely fortress, with nice detailing on the walls. I didn't go inside because I didn't have time but even just looking at it from the outside is worth it!

It was one of those rare cases when the castle is open in the evenings. A musical event with classic pieces. Unfortunately the place was crowded as the event was free

Went there as a local as i live here. So this is a recent renovated place from the ancient times. Just go there. The entrance fee is 1 or 2 euros. After there you can walk along the path to finish the marine road. Have a good time!

We visited Koules the venetian fortress in a sunny day of March. You can see the Venetian architecture and admire the port and the city of Heraklion

The Castello Koules at the Heraklio harbour is a splendid example of Roman technology and architecture...having lasted two millenia of storms and weather. Walk along the ramparts to see what things may have been in a different era.

The story of Koules is told briefly but well in the exhibits, and the true delight is in wandering the ramparts--perfectly crenelated-- from one spectacular viewpoint to another.

Koules is an inspiring sight at any time of the day, but I loved seeing it under the stormy sky. It was majestic. It made me contemplate the past when this was the stronghold of the city. How many storms has it faced? How many enemies tried to conquer it even before the Siege of Candia? The museum itself is... More

Well, I was not so amazed by the interiors, but I really loved the 360° view from the top of the roof - you can see the harbour and the sea :)

This is one of Heraklion's best historic sites. A recent renewal has been done beautifully. Good signage. Great displays of items recovered from shipwrecks in the area. The upper level offers spectacular views out to sea and across the city. You can get a sense of what it must have been like for Venetian forces to be within the 8... More

The venezian castello is in the harbour and has still his Turkish name Koules; Today is a museum inside and seems an old castel of knights; Massives walls has open arcs, and from here you have a wonderfull seaview and the harbour.
